Corners of mouth split
« on: January 05, 2012, 08:15:48 pm »

Help would be appreciated...

Anyway, since going to the orthodontist the other day, the corners of my mouth have been cracked and really, really painful. I have no idea why, and the ludicrous amount of chapstick I have put on has not helped.

I'm thinking it might just be because it's winter and the air is dry, but I dunno. Anyone have any idea?

Dry air, dehydration. Lip balm doesn't exactly help healing, and too much may actually impede it or aggravate the wound. A tiny dab of neosporin will prevent it from getting worse. Other than that don't fiddle with it.

One of mine did that too from the extreme dry cold, the best thing to do is just let it heal. Just don't yawn too much or pick at it and it should heal fully in a week or so.

If you don't drink a few glasses of water a day it might be a good time to start doing so.

Iron and other vitamin deficiancys can cause your skin to lose it's stretchiness and you'll get persistant cut like wounds at the corner of your mouth, from opening your mouth.

Oh I have that quite a lot actually.

I don't really do anything about it, heals up fairly quickly for me.

A bit more hydration wouldn't hurt I think.

Do you want to know how I got these scars?

...

Just had to be done. But yeah, such cracking is really common for long dentist or orthodontist appointments. With your mouth held open for that long, the normally warm, moist bits of your mouth tend to dry out and crack a bit, especially since they want the area they are working on to be as clean and dry as possible to avoid any bacteria or such from your saliva getting in. Probably isn't too much you can do to prevent it though. So long as you aren't overly dehydrated and keep the area clear of things like large quantities of chapstick and avoid large yawns or eating 1 pound burgers, it should heal up within a couple days; though it may hurt like hell til then if you do open wide.
