As with others, I've only tried 31.xx.

I played more 40d and enjoyed it greatly. I can't see myself going back to 40d any time so I'd say I prefer the 31.xx versions.

Maybe it's just that the learning curve cliff isn't quite as daunting to me any more, but I don't think I've ever had as much fun (or !!FUN!!) with the later versions as I did with 2D.  I still love the game and I still wind up staring in bafflement as the little drunkards screw it all up yet again, but somehow it's not the gut-wrenching sweat-inducing kind of fun it used to be. 

Maybe I'll reduce my embark points on my next world from the default and see if I can find some badgers.

I've tried them all, having started in 40d, briefly attempting 23a, and now playing in 31.xx of course.

I'd definitely say they all had their perks. Originally, the game just had so much hilarity, but I could never handle it, because, well, once you 3D, you can't Un-3D it. Also I need my graphic packs. Then in 40d, I absolutely loved that you could just have silly embarks, like 8 layers of pure sand, a major river, and a magma pipe, and just play it like a literal sandbox. But currently, there's just too much that's good, what with the new HFS, ghosts, and other great features that I'd never want to give up. Sure, I miss being able to change the raws and create obsidian mountains, and I miss the days where all the best embarks weren't taken by gigantic farms, but I'll always play the newest version, because Toady has a knack for replacing my favourite things, with two new amazing features.
