Awesome Volcano
« on: January 04, 2012, 05:48:57 pm »

So after some adventuring on a large world I generated recently, I decided to settle down and found a Fortress for the glory of Armok. I embarked on a volcano out in the hills that I had seen while adventuring.

I embark only to find that my dwarves are almost at the top of the map, and we don't have a cart. I decide to found my fort near the volcano (Magma forges FTW!) so I scroll over and then start heading down. Turns out that the volcano wall as created a huge obsidian cliff face of epic proportions! :o

32 z-levels of sheer obsidian not a ramp in sight, by the time you get to the top virtually the entirety of the volcano is free of the mountain side. It's almost like the rock in Minas-Tirith except with MAGMA!

Err... How do I attach a save file?

It also might be worth the time to upload screenshots/3D map renders. The volcano sounds interesting  :P

I tried DFFD but it kept telling me it couldn't upload a file with the .sav extension.

What programs can I use to get a 3D render?

Thanks.

Behold the Severe Fire! http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5325

Edit: Hmm Overseer would appear to be a .exe... This will take a while while I move the necessary files to windows...

This is a masterfully-engraved cliff dwelling in obsidian by Urist McAnasazi. It is encircled with bands of lava and menaces with spikes of green glass. On the item is an image of kittens. On the item is an image of Bomrek McKokopelli. BomrekMcKokopelli is surrounded by the kittens.

(In other words: Thank you, I've wanted a nice, sheer cliff face site for some time so I could try and make a cliff-dwelling style fort.)

For a 32 z-level cliff face, I don't think Stonesense would cut it. Doesn't it still crash when you try to dump the whole map to an image?

Edit: yes, Stonesense still gives funky results, then crashes on a full-map, all-Z screenshot.

This is the best I could do with limited-z. Maybe somebody with a higher-res monitor can do it justice.

It is a really lovely embark.

But you really have to love galena, giving that it will be the only ore you will find...

Silver warhammer traps are a fantastic alternative to iron/steel traps.

That happens a lot, but it's not exclusive. If there's a good swath of forest biome, you might have sedimentary layers underneath it. I've got plenty of iron ores and other goodies underneath Torchfancied.

I've had an embark like that before. I think it's just a generation bug or something. Or it possibly could be like a gas pump for the massive godly cars that run on magma and burned kittens.

Dwarves passing by get good thoughts from the mist of water and exploding felines.
Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).
