Hello, this is my first major problem I'm having since starting to play a few days ago. I cannot get any dwarves to produce charcoal for me.

1. I have assigned the "Wood Burner" labour to the dwarf I want to operate the furnace.

2. The Wood Furnace is not blocked, they have 1-2 spaces around them.

Questions.

1. When I press Q and put it over my Wood Furnace, the words "Wood Furnace" are in Red, what does this mean?

2. Apparently you cannot make it out of restricted/some sorts of materials or it won't be used? I used limestone.

3. I don't have a dwarf who immigrated with a proffession to burn wood, I've assigned a tanner with nothing but Wood Burner as a labour.

4. I read something about making sure Wood was not restricted? how do I check that out?

If you know the answer to any or all of these, answers would be very appreciated. I cannot find any information from googleing that seems to fix this problem, I cannot make progress with this problem.

1. That's normal - furnaces show their names in red, while other workshops tend to display their names in the color of the professions that use them.

2. If the material isn't valid, you won't be able to select it at all.

3. The labor alone should be sufficient.

4. If the wood wasn't available, then the tasks would be cancelling.


Some things to check:
1. Make sure your dwarves are capable of reaching the furnace (valid path, no locked doors).
2. Make sure your dwarves are allowed to go to the furnace (no burrow restrictions).
3. Make sure your dwarves are allowed to use the furnace (furnace's build material isn't Forbidden, workshop profile isn't too restrictive).

Thank you, I'm fairly sure I've done most of that but I'll check it all and post again in a few minutes.

Questions before I do

I can select the Wood Furnace and add tasks to make charcoal, so it is made out of a valid material? how do I know if it's forbidden?

I don't get messages about the charcoal task getting cancelled, I have a bunch of dwarves making bins, beds and barrels. As well as a significant stockpile of wood, is this problem being caused by the fact that I have dwarves using a fair amount of wood all the time?

Forgive the questions, I'm following a beginners tutorial and I haven't even gotten up to the parts where it explains some of the things I'm needing to do to fix this issue.

The problem is resolved I think.

I was assigning rooms to my dwarves that didn't have one which included my tanner who was to burn wood for me.

And I noticed him carrying wood to the furnace.
