every single time i try to trade with a merchant it crashes... not just once in a while but every time. is there maybe a temp fix for this?

windows XP sp2, intel 3.0ghz, 2gb ram, 6800ultra

Ah, don't you love bug reports like these?

Anyways, are these dwarven, elven, or human merchants?  Can you view what goods they are carrying through the [v]iew menu?  Does your assigned broker have any skill in appraisal, and if he/she does, how high a level?  

The more information you can provide, the better.

Ah, you know, that would probably be it.  Makes more sense, as I've managed to crash the game by talking with merchants in adventure mode.

However, that was with modding.  But at least it provides a new question to ask:

In his shop, do you see any items along the walls?  Any tables?

there were/are items along the wall, and it crashes either when i sell him stuff or buy from him. it seems to be some what random.. i'll open the trade screen and sometimes i can sell something and when i try to sell something else it crashes, or the first time i hit "t" to make the trade it crashes

ooh, i figured out when it crashes

everytime i try to sell a barrel, wether its full of stuff or not.. everytime crash!

This might be fixed for next time.  I fixed a class of trade crash bugs, anyway.  We'll have to wait and see, unless you've got a save with a trade that always crashes.  I'll need the region folder in some kind of zip/rar/7z, and any new objects that were added to the raw folder.  If it's less than 20 megs, you can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  You can also try The Dwarf Fortress File Depot which has a special section for bugged saves.
