Regarding Megabeasts and the Like
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:49:44 pm »

I've been constantly making my fortress really good, but I can't help but realise that In the time I've played dwarf fortress, Ive only encountered a giant, nothing much else. Is there anything that brings them in? Also is it possible to tame some of them? Perhaps a dragon? And also whats the best way to deal with them since the giant was killed by merchants and my speardwarf stabbing at his guts

Titans and above-ground megabeasts seem to actually be quite rare in my experience. It seems like a semimegabeast or megabeast only shows up every few years, and since semimegas outnumber megas they're far more likely to show up. Forgotten Beasts, however, are the megabeasts the caverns, being just as large and about as threatening as titans, and they show up much more often if you've revealed at least one cavern layer.

Anyway, for the most part, just increasing wealth and population will make them come more often. It's possible to tame dragons, hydras, and rocs, but bronze colossi and titans cannot be tamed, nor can any semimegas. The simplest way to deal with most of them is probably a cage trap, which will instantly stop any mega or semimega except titans and forgotten beasts in its tracks so you can deal with it at your leisure, but titans and forgotten beasts you basically need a military or upright spike field to slay.

It also helps if your world is large.  Pocket worlds might only have one or two megabeasts available to show up.  Medion or large worlds can have dozens.

Advanced worldgen will allow you to set the number of megabeasts and beast caves arbitrarily high.

They also battle and kill eachother during worldgen, so if your history is short then most of them will still be alive.

Some megabeasts would be tameable if not for an unfortunate bug that prevents the Dungeon Master noble you need to tame exotic pets from ever becoming available.
