Military uniforms?
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:12:26 pm »

I have my dwarves set to Inactive = uniforms, and my axe dwarves do carry they're axes when inactive since they're woodcutters, but when I activate them for a kill order, they drop the axe wherever they are then go to the order, is there a way to make them keep the axe in-hand before they run off to kill zombie badgers, or do I need to activate them, let them drop it, then give them time to "pickup equipment" before giving the kill order?
Their uniforms specifically say :Battle axes so they aren't just switching to a weapon to match uniform, they just drop them on the floor.

Military uniforms conflict with civilian gear. Assign them 2 axes. They will regard one as woodcutty axe and one as fightyaxe IIRC.

Ah, well that's rather annoying, thanks.

The civilian labors which have required equipment, including woodcutting, mining, and hunting, have an invisible, hardcoded pseudo-uniform that interferes with military uniforms. When your woodcutter-soldiers go on duty, they think, "hey, I need an axe!" but don't realize that they're already holding one, so they drop the thing-that-obviously-isn't-an-axe and go find a different axe. If you watched, you'll see that the same thing happens when they go off-duty. It is for this reason that woodcutters, miners, and hunters don't actually make very good soldiers, because they randomly disarm themselves right when you want them to actually fight. There's no known way around this quirk.

The solution, naturally, is to have separate professional soldiers instead of a civilian militia.

Ah, fair enough, well after trying to strangle the first few batches of zombie badgers, their unarmed fighting skills are getting pretty usable [somehow they managed to not get mauled too, though one of the war dogs lost a paw], I'll have some extra axes for them to use soon anyway as I finally have the resources for (wood-powered) metalworks and iron/steel equiptment.
