The Total War games sort-of qualify. Think Civ where you fight the battles too.

I'll join the above poster in heaping praise upon FfH2.

Too bad it requires not only Civ4 but also its expansion "Beyond the sword".

BtS if worth buying on it's own merits IMO.  Then again, you can always yo ho ho and a bottle of rum it.  I hear the last official patch even removes the DRM requiring a CD.

It would be if I already didn't have Civ4...

Meaning to get BtS I'd have to rebuy Civ4 due to scarcity.

Well, if you lurk around Steam you should be able to nab the whole Civ IV plus expansions package at some point for super cheap – that's how I wound up buying Colonization (I already had Civ IV + BTS but the deal made it worthwhile).

You not buy BtS, you buy FfH2, which surpasses in quality any civilization-like game to date. Seriously it's THAT good.

Nobody mentioned Elemental: War of Magic? For shame, this is a great game. Better than Civ in my opinion.

Elemental was a horrible disappointment. Bland as cardboard. There is a thread discussing it somewhere on these forums.

I love Dominions III, but it is mainly a multiplayer game and steeply priced. I don't understand why Shrapnel can't lower the price already... I hope the new Conquest of Elysium Illwinter is making goes through some other route than Shrapnel. They clearly don't know how to gain large audiences for games.

Unpolished? Maybe, but far from being bland.
Besides, have you actually tried it with the latest patches?

If you want something simpler where a game can be finished in 20 minutes, I recommend Slay. It is very good and a personal favourite for a long time.

Dominions 3 should get a mention. It's not as pretty or offers as much to do per turn as Civ 4....but it's got so much more flavor of a different variety than half the TBS, 4x games out there. Really, no game lets you create a "monarch" quite like Dom 3. It's not a quick game, and doesn't shine its brightest in SP, but it's a great game none the less.

Elemental, War of Magic on the other hand....is a poor choice. It tries to be every 4x game you ever loved and barely manages to be one you like.

I didn't make it more than 20 hours into Tactics Ogre....but I recall the Zodiac bosses from FFT being some of the most unforgiving fights in TBS.

Yeah the Wiegraf fight is tough.  But there's a 1 on 1 battle in Tactics Ogre as well.
Spoiler: Wiegraf made easy (click to show/hide)
The rooftop fight after that, however, goddamn.

If you're into realism and history, Matrix Games has a huge set of titles that might suit your likings.

http://www.matrixgames.com/

The kings of the hill are of course the brand new War in the East and the mega-strategy War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition(See my play-by-email AAR in the Play With Your Buddies section).

I would recommend Solium Infernum if it was not so pricy. It's a bit on the boardgamish side - there is auction bidding for resources and "pulling cards" but it's deep and setting is great.
If you are out for freeware there is a couple of free wargames that cover WW2 and years after. I believe they are mentioned in the list of free games on this forum. These are only for military stuff, though.
Wow. I did not notice your post first, it's definitely fun!

For one that is somewhere between a civ game and a trading game, try Merchant Prince (also goes by the name Machivelli: The Prince). There was also a second installment released at some time, although I haven't played it.

It's quite a different experience from civ. It still has warfare elements, but trade in goods is the thing that supports that. You also get to buy your way into being pope or the mayor (doge) amongst other things. How many games do you get to assasinate and bribe your way into the papacy? Not enough in my opinion.

Are there any global scale games not by terrible companies like matrix and shrapnel? I'm not paying €70 for something with no demo and a digital download that only remains valid for 10 days.
