obsidian short sword traps
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:08:56 pm »

my defensive set up is a long hallway with weapon traps. the traps use 3 obsidian short swords. so are obsidian short swords ok for this or are they slightly better than a wooden training spear

I was told in another thread that obsidian short swords were just below steel swords, in sharpness.  So yup.  Good clever, indeed.  Sharper than copper, iron and silver, someone told me.  And way WAY sharper than wood.

Here is the thread bout it.

Not sure if you'll get the punch tho, of a trap component, with size of 300.  But ya might sever a finger or two.  Serrated discs have a size of 1000.

The greatness behind short swords is their four attacks, of various types.  They are very flexible damage dealers, in a pinch.  I don't think the weapon trap, gives you this flexibility when it trips, it just does one default swipe.  And here, your sword might be not so good, as its size and contact area is lesser.

Its something to think about.  But if you have umpteen million obsidian sitting around, I can see where it would be trivial problem, just lay down 3 or four more traps, ya know what I mean?

If you have sand and magma, it'd be far more effective to make glass trap weapons rather than using dwarf weapons.

Yes and no. Steel is the gold standard, and masterwork adamantite corkscrews are the platinum standard. Glass works when made into large spiked balls (and you can make as many as you need with a little sand and a little magma) but for cutting attacks you need a material that's as hard or harder than the target's armor to have a good chance of piercing it.

While I haven't tested it, I've been told that obsidian is no longer equal to steel and that it's now not a very good material.

On the other hand, invaders don't come in full body armor, their hands and feet are almost always unprotected.

The spinning large serrated green glass disc strikes the Goblin Lasher in the upper body, but the attack is stopped by the *copper breastplate*!
The Goblin Lasher loses hold of the silver whip!
The spinning large serrated green glass disc strikes the Goblin Lasher in the right lower arm, and the severed part sails off in an arc!

Obsidian is a step below copper in terms of armor penetration, although vs unarmored targets it works well enough.  I find they are a good compromise between a training sword and a real sword for an early militia.  They are lethal enough to actually kill things but weak enough that it takes some time, giving more practice per creature.
