Gathering the loot from your slain enemies
« on: December 16, 2011, 11:32:08 am »

Love DF.  I was wondering:  when enemies are slain are all their possessions forbidden?

And if so is there an easy way to loot them?

Mostly I suppose the weapons are what's of interest (one way to do this is to go to the stocks menu and just un-forbid everything that's forbidden in the "weapons" list).  Is there a better way to do this?

How about a better way to do it for all items?

If it's just one snatcher for example I generally know where the body is and I think I can d-b-c the body.  I'm more talking about a full squad of troll bodies for example littering the surrounding forests.

The easiest way that I have found to do it is with the dbc method, just select one corner of the battlefield/map as the starting point and the opposite corner as the ending point. That should then unforbid everything in the selected area. Other than that the second best way is to do exactly as you suggested, which is to go into the stocks menu and unforbid everything there.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I usually prefer to mass reclaim+dump the items to a spot near (but inside) my entrance and then sort them from there - metal stuff gets melted (excluding bolts for practice and silver whips for training lashers) and everything else gets chucked into a nearby (within 10 tiles) atom smasher.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You can choose from (o)rders, (F)orbid whether or not to claim enemy corpses and equipment.

It depends on personal play style, but I typically Forbid enemy stuff by default and only Claim in specific situations, for example if my map doesn't have a lot of metal, I will melt down enemy weapons/armor. Their socks and loincloths lie forbidden on the battlefield where they fell.

I'm pretty sure the orders for forbidding enemy equipment have no effect in the current version, since the items are forbidden the instant they arrive on the map in the first place (seemingly in order to prevent them from being assigned to your soldiers).

Thanks for clarifying this... in that case, the default settings work well for my preferred play style. ;)

What I do, is I have a macro set up that hits ENTER, scrolls up and to the right a great deal, hits ENTER again, then scrolls down and to the left an equal amount, then goes down one z-level. Whenever I want to reclaim everything on the map, I enter the designation menu, the items designation submenu, select reclaiming, put the cursor in the bottom-left corner of the highest z-level I want to reclaim on the map, and run the macro as many times as I need to. This same macro is useful for marking everything for melting or dumping (or removing those designations), clearcutting a forest, or gathering a lot of plants, and I've used it to make burrows sometimes, too. It's just a "select whole map" macro, and is quite useful.

Making a macro is fairly simple. Hit ctrl-r, and until you hit ctrl-r again, the game will record your keystrokes. So, put the cursor in one corner of the map, hit ctrl-r, hit ENTER, scroll to the far corner of the map, hit ENTER again, then scroll back to the starting position and hit ctrl-r, moving up or down a z-level before ending recording if you want. Then, hit ctrl-s and type in an appropriate name to save the macro. Hitting ctrl-p will play back the currently-loaded macro, while hitting ctrl-l will allow you to load a previously-saved macro.
