I'm Urist McStupid with Pumpstacks, help please!
« on: December 15, 2011, 02:11:35 pm »

So after nearly drowning my first dwarf with a single pump, I'm totally terrified to try and make a magma pump stack to bring some up from the magma sea, but I still wanna try it.

I looked over the wiki and find it's one thing to conceptually understand a schematic and the instructions but a completely different thing to employ it. And even glanced over youtube videos hoping I could find one with someone building one, nothing jumped out at me though.

Can anyone explain to this fool a simple method to achieve my goals? I don't mind torching my fort a few times as long as I can get it right eventually and have an efficient setup that doesn't look like complete hell (I'm a whore for aesthetics if possible.)

I'm having the same problem; pump stacks seem difficult. I've decided to experiment with water first--at least that won't set things on fire.

I had that idea, but I felt like I would want it in a controlled area and then I thought making a controlled area would be just as much of a pain in the ass as actually doing it. I mean I could backup my game and torch my dwarves to my hearts content but I want a better understanding before I jump into it.

Not to mention I think having more information on this could help others coming into this situation.

I don't know how to make it simpler than the wiki.
If you almost drowned a dwarf I would guess that you either chose the wrong direction to pump or you didn't pump into an enclosed area.

Which is it? Post some pics or a save if you want someone to tell you what you did wrong.

Oh I know what I did wrong, and  could fix that issue. It's just a pump stack sort of blows my mind. Powering it, Properly holding and draining the liquid.
Do I want to hook it to a switch and only fill the storage area up just enough, or should I set it up to drain back into the sea.

What's the best way to prevent monsters from coming up and into my fort when I breach it and set everything up. Do I just dig a channel down and a staircase next to it to allow each pump to be built?

The basic setup is pretty much these two layouts alternating by level (where W=wall, F=floor, H=channel, X=stairs, D=door)

pump from south to north:
Code: [Select]
  WWW
  WFW
 FWHW
 XDFW
  WHW
  WWW

pump from north to south:

Code: [Select]
  WWW
  WHW
 FDFW
 XWHW
  WFW
  WWW

This is what the wiki shows but it has some diagrams showing what it would look like from the side

To keep magma sea monsters out, I just build a grate over the sea. You can pump liquids through a grate and I don't think it can be destroyed from below in the current version.
I'm guessing you understand how power is transferred vertically by the pump stack, so all you have to do use a gear or axle to power any one of the pumps.

Your storage area can't overflow unless you are pumping from a higher z-level than the top walls of your reservoir, so you probably don't need to stop the flow. I usually block the flow to my water wheel power plant to stop all of the pumps. Doors, floodgates, bridges, and hatches can all be used to block off the magma wherever you like, though, as long as you plan it out.

Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Now I just need to go toy with it.

you don't need a pump. just use a pressure geyser. works for water and it works for lava. plus less room for a FUN mistake

and build the stack down to up, or the pumps on a hole will collapse. you can build it from both up and down to the middle, if there is something (a horizontal axle for example) to hang the pumps.

@jaxler :  And by "pressure geyser", Im guessing you mean "magma piston"?

???

all i know is that lava can go up z-lvls if there is pressure behind it.

You can build a testing area that can later be useful.

Dig a deep column of, say, 6x6 floors or so somewhere on the corner of the map to set up your pump system. You can test out a water pump here and if you fail it's out of the way. If it doesn't, you can use the system for two things:

1) Bringing water down (and then back up) to any level of the fortress for use in wells, irrigation, etc.

2) Emergency pumping of water that is flooding the fortress
