How do I know what flux stone I'm using?
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:38:52 am »

I can make pig iron and apparently steel too (I made 8 bars earlier today) so I'm pretty excited but I have no idea what I'm using as flux stone. Is there some way to find out other than looking up every stone I have access to under (Z), Stone?

Is it Pitchblende?

See I'm too lazy to look it up.

Only certain stones can be used as flux; calcite, chalk, dolomite, limestone and marble. If you have more than one of those available then it's always the closest stone to the forge.

Is that really all the flux stones

I'll check my stone stocks, I hope that works without stockpiles. Probably it does since it takes so long to highlight I imagine it's inventorying all the stone everywhere

Oh I have 13000 stone and need higher precision bookkeeping to see a breakdown or maybe there isn't one for stone but the game freezes > 10 seconds when I highlight it in Stocks lol. I wonder what that does to my RAM

I just replaced it :3

Easy way: Queue up some steel at the smelter. When the furnance operator starts work, hit "t" and move the cursor over the smelter to see what he's collected to use.

Flux is wonderful stuff. Furniture made out of it is twice as valuable (who doesn't want solid marble furniture?) and you'll burn through surprising quantities of it just keeping the steel smelters going. The kind really is irrelevant; they're all about the same so just keep digging at whatever you've got.

It's advisable to set up a flux stockpile near the smelters, and another stockpile that accepts flux near the mason's shop.

The game will run slightly faster if you mass-dump useless stones (not magma safe, not ores, not fluxes) down a magma tube so they hit semi-molten rock or otherwise permanently leave the game. The same is true of troll fur loincloths and other items of questionable use that you're too lazy to sell.

Oh good plan

I think it was Dolomite

Yeah I have 3950 of that. I thought it would be something in short supply.

Let me try to find a magma tube to dispose of some rock. I plan to dig to Hell in this fortress (Likoturol) since it's been seven years with no sieges and I need a challenge of some kind now that I've finally got my armies training again (had to choose them in the barracks screen and hit 'T') and equipped with iron armour and steel armaments :3

extra rocks are a great way to train up mechanists and other folks who mainly use stone. Drop the finished product down the magma tube instead

Or use it for a megaproject. Dunno if built walls eat up FPS or not.

only when you got to => stocks => stones. If you have about 3000 stones built into various structures it'll pause a second or 10, less for better computers
