In adventure mode, is it only Elves that can talk to animal-men?
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:55:40 am »

I have checked the wiki for this information, but it does not seem to be there anymore. I am assuming that if adventure mode still works like it used to, only Elves can speak to the animal men (e.g. tigermen, amphibian men and so on). Does anyone know the answer to this question? I would enjoy having a chat with animal men but I couldn't possibly bring myself to create an elf adventurer.

You can only talk with non-hostile creatures that [CAN_SPEAK] or are [INTELLIGENT], provided you [CAN_SPEAK] or are [INTELLIGENT] yourself.
The [ENTITY:FOREST] that defines the elven civ system has [AT_PEACE_WITH_WILDLIFE], so wild creatures (including tigermen) are not hostile, therefore animal men can be spoken to only by elven adventurers in vanilla DF.

Thank you very much sir. That has fully answered my question, and for that I am grateful. However, I was wondering about the tigermen that can be bought in cages and kept alive in dwarf fortresses. If I were to visit a fortress that had been abandoned and once contained tiger men, would they still be hostile?

Now that's much more complicated. I think that the tigerman then belongs to your fortress civ, which probably overrides the [LIKES_FIGHTING] tag. Then the tigerman should react hostile to exactly the enemies of his civ, so it depends on if you are an enemy of his civ or not. So if you start as a human outsider, you aren't enemies with any civ, and if you don't mess it up, you should be able to talk to your tigermen even without [AT_PEACE_WITH_WILDLIFE]. Or you could just play a dwarf from your starting civ. But I'm not sure here, the best way to find out is just to try it out. What's your adventurer's civ?
