Dwarf Stuck on Magma Smelter, Dies fiery death.
« on: September 05, 2006, 03:33:00 am »

Had one dwarf try to leave his magma smelter and ended up stuck on the bottom right hand corner. Started to badly path spam when he finally got thirsty.

Turns out this corner was over the magma, so when I did what I could to relieve the problem, i.e. destroyed the smelter, he plunged to a firey death.

The dwarf just walked on and couldn't walk off?  Oh, well.  I guess they always find new ways to be stupid.

I've had a similar issue.  My legendary furnace operator decided he was going to stand on the center part of the right side of the magma smelter (the part that MUST be touching the magma).  Well, he couldn't get off.  Building a steel bridge didn't get him off either.  Destroying the building led him to a fiery death.

It's a shame.  That little guy was able to make each metal bar in less than a second even with the smelters massively cluttered.

I've found that if I draft them they walk away without problems.

I've had this problem happen more than once - the first one died of thirst, the second I tried dismantling the building and he burned up. It's always on the center-right square, the one that has to be on the magma.

Nice tip about activating them, I'll try that next time.

Well, it happened again, and (A)ctivating didn't do any good - poor fellow was still stuck and spamming thirsty messages. He died shortly thereafter.

This is a nasty little bug that is constantly getting me. It usually doesn't get my operators, it gets their children. My metalsmith arrived with a child, and when I set up the magma smelter the child followed him right on over to the right side tile and was stuck there until they died. It can sometimes get other people too, though. Like I have had haulers come in to haul bars out of the smelter, and then get stuck over the lava.

Strangely, sometimes they can walk off the tile no problem. It is only in some cases that they become permanently stuck.

All it would take to fix is to set the center side tiles as impassable when they are the one being used as the heat source.

Just had the same problem, complete with firey death for my Legendary Miner/Elite Wrestler. Except that he was in the upper right hand corner of the smelter.

Tried Drafting him, but it didn't work. Had to eventually dismantle the smelter and watch him burn.

Painful, painful stuff.

By my experience drafting a dwarf stuck in a smelter or in a statue helps in all cases except for when they are so much thirsty or hungry that their "food pathfinding algorithm" wins over "military job pathfinding algorithm" every time.

Or when they're children.  Even though their parent is one square away, smelting away while the kid dies of friggin' thirst.

If a child gets there, you might as well dismantle the thing and burn them ASAP, because there's no way to save them.

Otherwise, you have to keep an eye on the smelters and make sure you catch stuck dwarves before they get hungry\thirsty\tired. Activate them and move them away immediately. If they're already trying to get a drink, maybe you could get them to cancel by flooding the area with water or loosing a dangerous critter near them?

Why does this happen?

Theres an easy way to save anyone there, actually.

Just recruit someone else - anyone will do - and have them walk on the same tile as them. You may have to have them walk back and forth between the tile they are on and one beside it, but the trapped people will usually walk off pretty quickly.

I found this out in my recent generational fortress. If I hadn't found a way to save the children, I wouldn't have a generational fortress at all - I'd have 2 parents constantly miserable from losing all their kids. I swear, EVERY SINGLE time the mother comes near the forge, even for a second to pick up an item, a swarm of kids decide its time to visit mom, and I get 5 or 6 of them stuck on the forge and have to send someone to the rescue.

This actually works best if they are trying to eat or drink, since it will constantly check for a path and find it once you put another dwarf on top of them. Ones that are idle will usually take a while before they decide to move.
