I have this fortress with 45 dwarves in it, and I'm having trouble loading it. When I try to load it, I get the error message "One of the compressed files on disk has errors on it. Restore from backup if you are able." What should I do, and how should I do it?

Well, your save is corrupted.
Do you have backup saves? If no, then your dwarves are lost. If yes, then go to df/data/save and delete the regionX folder (your current region), then rename the most recent regionX-abc-123 folder to regionX.
To prevent this from happening again, open df/data/init/init.txt and change [COMPRESSED_SAVES:YES] at the very bottom of your file to NO.
Then open df/data/init/d_init.txt and change


[AUTOSAVE:NONE]

[AUTOBACKUP:NO]


to

[AUTOSAVE:SEASONAL]

[AUTOBACKUP:YES]
