A social experiment involving chickens.
« on: November 12, 2011, 12:09:27 am »

I have locked 36 chicks in a pasture room with a fungi floor and several nest boxes, the experiment is to see what year the chickens peak in population, and when their population declines, ie: watch it fluctuate.
it will be interesting to watch as they will fight over food, and space until there is none left.
I shall post my findings.

... chickens and other poultry don't graze. The only deaths will be by being murdered by their fellows.

Heh, I'm picturing the same kind of enclosed pasture but with rabbits or cavies instead of chickens. :D

That incident was really what clued me in to the depth this game can offer, though that one time I made a fort of 150 dwarves suspended over a gorge and cut it all loose was pretty fun too.

I've got an image in my head of a pile of chicks in a glass box looking like a massive popcorn machine.

But yeah, by the time you have heaps of grazers in there the food'll be trampled before it can feed anything and they'll end up dying faster than they could breed. Couldn't hurt to try though, I've been wrong before.

I think the lack of space would kill them soon, if not then the interruption by movement on those eggs will. One question, why add the fungi?

I was under the impression they were grazers, plus better than having them get eaten by zombie pandas.

Chickens don't graze.  You don't need to worry about feeding them anything.

Well to spoil it for everyone I'll say that chickens survive perfectly well in cramped conditions. As a terrible person poultry farming die-hard I've noticed that chicks can survive in extremely cramped situations; they will be just fine sharing a square with 4 or so other chickens.

They will eventually start to fight due to space issues though. Usually it's not enough to kill them just constant snatches and bloodsplatter everywhere. Ancedotally (that is, probably wrong) turkeys seem to be the worst for that.

What you really need to do is to have a bunch of hens, one rooster (kept outside), and have a cell with one spot per hen, each with a nest box. See what the population eventually averages as, and whether you get noticeable improvements with different arrangements of space.
