0.27.176.38c Dwarves fleeing from goblins far below
« on: May 10, 2008, 12:14:00 am »

I'm on a rather cliffy map (thankfully) right next to a set of goblin towers.  My dwarves were happily whiling away when, gasp!  A kobold thief is seen stealing . . . a narrow sock?  I've killed no goblins yet!

Seems a named giant rat, named Hollowsong of all things, has been slaughtering goblins stuck on my level, nearly ten levels above the top of their tower!  Three of them.  Needless to say, I was actually thrilled.  Money for an anvil.  Alas, I can't get them.

See, every time my dwarves get near where the bodies are, they somehow 'see' the goblin high priest ten levels below and cancel job, running in terror.  I can't attack the goblins, as I plan to dig a gigantic reservoir and flood them all out.  I figure they only calculate X/Y distance in their civilian 'flee' mode and not the Z distance.  It makes me afraid to make anyone military around that cliff, as they very well could leap off it to attack and end up little dwarf chunks.

Actually, it's just that civilians don't want to be in line-of-sight of any hostiles, so if they see goblins, they'll run, no matter that the goblins can't reach them. After all, goblins have bows. They could easily shoot your civilians down where they are.

Your marksdwarves won't leap off the cliff unless they're meleeing something next to it and dodge in the wrong direction.

I give a half of kingdom for the ability to switch the dodging off in combat menu (where you assign weapons/hunting tasks) for special cases.
I've lost a champion this way - he was happily tearing the 7th goblin apart when he dodged. Needless to say he was on 1-tile wide long bridge above the chasm which was the only entrance to my fortress.
