Violating the law of conservation of mass
« on: March 05, 2007, 04:41:00 pm »

This is a really minor thing, but I figured I'd mention it.  I was constructing metal blocks to test if they're as useless as they sound.  They are, but I discover a nifty parlor trick.  Metal blocks require one metal bar, which weighs 200Γ, but the resulting block weighs 250Γ.  That's right!  Impress your friends!  Annoy rival physicists!  Forge metal blocks and show them what you think about their so-called "law."

I would not be so sure about that "Metal Block"
Perhaps best to have it cut into two pieces and investigated, who knows, maybe that Dwarfen Mafia switched from "accidential drownings" (Oh, the seasonal flood is coming, I'll go for a walk on the bridge) to other disposal means...

Ouch, I didn't think of that.  50Γ is too small to be a dwarf, but how much does a dwarf chunk weigh?

I'm not sure I thought about or verified any of the weight numbers.  Same goes for the amount of space something takes in a container and container capacity.  I figured it was all going to change sooner or later and didn't bother balancing it out.

Understood.  I was actually just doing some experimenting with metal blocks, figuring out what they could and couldn't do, and when I saw the weight quirk I got a good laugh.

I think you can do terrible things with the stretchability of leather backpacks in adventure mode.

Yeah, the weights are funny. My experience with traders indicates that pound for pound, meat is currently more valuable than silver bars. (What *is* the unit of measurement used for weight in DF anyway?)

Backpacks used to work as Bags of Holding, provided the wearer was a legendary Armor User and not fatigued/hungry/drowsy/etc.  They might still be, but I haven't tested the latest versions in Adventure Mode.

A pound of dwarven cheese is also worth the same as a pound of cut rubies.

That's a reflection of exactly how difficult it is to milk a maggot.

Suspiciously, People Chunks weight exactly 50Γ...  I'm mighty suspicious.

I can see the notifications now; 'Charleton Heston, Metalsmith cancles Make Metal Block; METAL BLOCKS ARE PEOPLE!'
