Ive been playing this one map for 2 - 3 years now i think.

Not one cat has befriended a dwarf....

(Not that i want them too, because then that means i can't slaughter them)

But this is a bug and i feel compelled to report it.

Cats don't adopt at all quickly if there aren't any dwarves around that like cats. It's just a pretty common preference for dwarves to have, so usually your problem is cats adopting almost immediately. Just give it time.

Also, cats adopt based on how often and how much they see a particular dwarf.  If you have a cat that spends 90% of it's time killing stuff at the edges of the map, and virtually none anywhere in sight of a dwarf, that cat won't adopt anyone for a very long time.  For the same reason sticking your kitten cage in the middle of your dining room, pretty much guarantees they will ALL adopt someone in short order (I didn't realize why it was happening till someone mentioned that adoptions were partly based on that cats seeing certain dwarves..).     :roll:

For this reason in my latest fort my kitten cage is located out on a ledge where hardly anyone has any reason to go, beyond the occasional kitten cager, and maybe a visit from a weaver to gather webs.

Every single cat i have on that map are not linked to any dwarfs.

I understand everything you guys said, but none of that accounts for this.

Not a single cat has bonded with a dwarf and its been a good 2 years.

None of what you guys say can explain this. Every other fortress i've had, at least one cat has bonded because i see them that they have when i look in the animal list. However on this map not one cat has bonded.

I guess a good way to test this would be to find a dwarf with a cat liking personality trait, and make sure he has no job, so he hangs out where the cats will. You could probably speed it up if you cage them, though I forget if you can do that to an already domesticated animal.

You can cage any tame animal, as long as it's not someones pet or assigned as a work animal (war or hunting) to someone.

I have the opposite problem. One of my dwarves has over 21 cats! Maybe there should be a maximum number of adoptable pets per dwarf.

i wish there was a way to turn it off completely from the init file. Id rather not have any of my animals linking up with the dwarfs at this stage. Not until the game Becomes better optimized.

Also the option to turn it off so migrants don't arrive with animals, and if they do they should not be attached to any of the migrants.

Maybe just an option to limit the amount of cats in your fortress. I don't want to butcher them!

Try to remove the tag [VERMINHUNTER] from the cats raw. They wont hunt vermin anymore, but they also wont choose their own owner.

Well, the whole reason i even bring cats, is to kill the vermin heh.

If it wasen't for that, then i would only bring 2 war dogs and 2 pigs
