Rotting Spleens?
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:25:51 pm »

I had a FB die a while back leaving it's blood on the soldiers who then proceed to clean it at the well. When they washed it off it went on the floor and many dwarves stepped on it and spread it about. After about a month, I was able to subdue the infection and save the people who almost died from the vomiting, complete numbness and blisters. Although, the only thing I couldn't stop was all their rotting spleens. A year later all some of the dwarves who had the infection are faint from blood loss because of the rotting spleen. How am I supposed to stop it?

Nice to see that dwarven medicine has evolved to the point of blood-letting.

Are you sure it's lethal to have a rotting spleen?

It might depend on healing rate (some dwarves can replace blood faster than others), but I'm pretty sure it would cause blood loss and eventual death in at least some percentage of dwarves.

Also, even if the dwarf can survive the blood loss, it'd be better to have the spleen out, so they can deal with "normal" blood loss due to, say, being attacked by a naked mole dog that found its way into the fort.

It is also possible that the "Faint" and "Pale" statuses are the result of massive spleen infections rather than blood loss. Though fever usually accompanies. If it is infection rather than internal bleeding, I believe that your dwarfs have no chance after the onset of symptoms. Sorry.

When I look at the health screens, it appears that the dwarves that are faint and pale all were diagnosed with the beast sickness several times.
In their wounds screen, it has:
