Just started playing this game recently, so I'm not sure if this is a bug or I'm doing something wrong.

Dwarven caravan came to my base, and I traded a bunch of chalk jewelry for coke and iron bars.  The jewelry disappeared, from my side, but the coke and bars stayed on the caravan's side.  I could then trade again and again for the items.  Am I getting multiple of the items or just throwing the jewelry away?

You're hitting (o)ffer, not (t)rade.

Offer gives it away for free.  Trade does an actual trade.

Thats called learning, often mistaken in this game but vital to survival. We were all there.

i never made that mistake

for any elven caravan, dont offer them wooden barrels or bins or whatever, it upsets em

people advocate killing any but dwarven caravans "by accident" but elf armor is wooden and useless, and human armor is too large. So just dump your junk on them and take whatever useful stuff they have, since raiding their caravans is useless, though fun (IMO)

I never made that mistake.  I have a tendency to hit T by mistake, instead of <ENTER>.  Which is just about like giving stuff away, most times, it feels.  Never knew there was an offer, to your mountainhome.  I know ya can offer to the other civies.  Learning all the time.  Thanks for asking that Q, OP!
