Wrestling/striking synergy
« on: October 18, 2011, 01:56:31 pm »

Allow me to begin this with a short story.

Here is my adventurer, who I have had wrestling badgers to death for several days. He is a legendary +10 wrestler and fighter, a legendary dodger, and also a competent swordsdwarf. So, I go into a bandit camp, with one or two members. I duck behind the first bandit and grab him by the head with my left arm, then I move to slash his throat open with my bronze scimitar.

Unfortunately, despite having the poor sod literally in the palm of my hand, I cannot slash his throat. It is somehow impossible; I cannot land the blow squarely. Confused and irritated, I kick the bandit away and grab his partner and take him down by the arm, step on his chest and move to slice this ones head off proper-like. But despite being prone and pinned, I still cannot decapitate him! In my irritation, I choke the bitches to death and then later die via dodging a bolt into a river.

My request is this- would it be possible to update the system to where wrestling and striking techniques could be used in unision, rather than being seperated? So a knife-using wrestler can carve pretty designs as he breaks bones, and so a puncher/kicker can slam his opponents head into his knee? Because I think creating that kind of technique would increase the realism- and epicness- of adventurer combat by several levels.

and this placeholder is 5x more complex than any big budget game has managed (ASCII does help)

as for the idea, it would be nice. I wasn't aware of being able to stand on people, pinning them. I'll have to try and choke some bandits doing that later. Being able to chop them up while you do that could also be cool.

As for the pinning, with my foot... What I think I actually did was referred to as 'grabbing the chest' with my [lower?]leg, but it makes more sense and is easier to visualize as pinning with my foot, esp. considering he was prone and I was standing. In the same way, kicking has no knockback. The story was completely true other than those minor modifications though.

If I was any good at modding, I'd try to update the system myself, but as I'm not... I just have to appeal to the modders and developers, in the hopes that one will be inspired or something.

Assuming that this is indeed moddable is very, perhaps unwarrantably, optimistic. But I like your suggestion.

At the moment grabbing only stops an enemy from dodging. Standing on the same square keeps him "pinned" in the sense that he can't stand up.

There are a lot of combat details on the to-do list, mainly keeping track of positions and reach. At the moment a dwarf can just bite a giant in the nose or grab someones foot and head with a single limb, but in the later goals the larger monsters will need climbing them Shadow of the Colossus -style.

Believe you me, we modders would have done this long ago were it possible. But you're asking us to change something that's hardcoded when we don't have source code to work with. It's not possible like that.

Oh?

I thought I just wasn't able to find the code to modify it. Again, no coding knowledge, and not even a 'dabbling' modder here.

So, I just have to hope the Toady one looks at this idea and likes it then, I guess?

I get it now.
