Human Caravan Loitering
« on: February 26, 2007, 01:07:00 pm »

I have this wierd state where the human caravan won't leave my fort.  A merchant and a mule are wandering my halls while the wagon is stuck in the trade depot, doing nothing.  Nobody will leave.  This is the first visit by the human caravan and I have no nobles, nor did they come with any nobles.   Previously Toady mentioned this being part of bug #239, but again, their's no nobles involved this time around.  Any ideas of how to kick them out?

I have an idea of what might be causing this.  The basic thing is this, I'm not sure if wagons have a limit to how many things they can carry.  I have a strong suspision that the problem is that, i cleaned out the caravan, then sold/offered every last ounce of space they had, and they couldn't carry all the stuff back properly.  Thus, a lot of the junk was left hanging around the trade depot with the humans unable to manage a way to get the damn stuff back home and they were unwilling to leave yet.

So, this all might have to do with giving too much to the wagons, when they can't 'fit' everything into their wagons and mules.

It's just a guess.

Bug 239 doesn't have anything to do with nobles -- were they ever startled by a forest creature or a thief or a sieger or anything like that?  That's the only thing I've been able to link to it.  The capacity won't be an issue since they don't bother checking capacity before they go.  Any items that are left over are probably meant for the mule that won't leave (which was possibly a mule that was startled).

Already talked about this in the forums but I'll post it here for postarity.  Yes, the caravan got attacked by some raccoons that scared off a mule merchant.  So it must have been that.  I was able to get the caravan to leave properly eventually by making sure they still had over 300 units of free weight space left before they left.

Anycase, you're well aware of the bug, and that's all that really matters.

I had this problem twice. First time, the dwarven merchants retreated into the fortress, I forget why; they hung around for over a year, while other merchants came and went without problems. (I have a save of this a few seasons in, if it'd be useful.) Then I discovered you can make them go away by dismantling the trade depot, and they leave the goods they traded for behind.

The second time, some macaques came calling while the human caravan was there. These days, I have my military patrolling the road to prevent the problem.

I have a save which I've posted in case it might help: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=73

The human merchants won't leave after the game indicates they are leaving. This seems to happen every year since they got startled by some ambushing goblins a couple of years back. The only way I've found to make them leave is to mess with the trade depot (forbid or deconstruct it), which makes them leave empty-handed.
I have a feeling they might not appreciate leaving empty handed year after year, and page after page after page of their crap which I have no need of is left clogging up the depot.

For this bug, a post-event save isn't so important as just sitting down and making beasts torment the merchants until I fix it.  It has been happening so consistently I think it'll be straightforward when I get there.

The last time the humans came to mine, there was one wagon that took FOREVER, it was like it was piloted by a drunk.  It slowly crawled over my paved road and finally got to the trade depot.

By the time everyone finally left the map (that same one took forever to leave) it was mid autumn, and the dwarf caravan never arrived that year.

That was also the  year I got the most heinous amount of sieges yet, from every accessible direction.  It would have been nice to have the dwarf caravan soldiers help out, but maybe they caught wind of the goblin scent and decided I could fend for myself.

I've got both the humans and the dwarves stuck at my current fortress. I deconstructed my above-ground depot around the humans; they're stuck in its former location, and the dwarves are below ground at the new depot. The dwarves were sposed to leave perhaps a week ago, gametime.
