Super Dee Duper Newb Question! :D
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:13:06 am »

How do you move saves?
( e.g. How do you pack one up, and then install it somewhere else? )

In the folder where the DF executable is located, go to data/save. Your save will be region#, where # is some number. Cut/Copy and paste wherever you need it. When you want to load it again, put it in the same data/save directory.

I mean ones that are still running, like Weatherwires.

Exactly what Eidolon said. If you're asking about how to send them to other people, upload them on DFFD.

Put the save folder in on a USB stick or zip it up and use DFFD or email it. Seriously, you just need to pick the files up and transfer them, there's nothing to stop you just copying and pasting it.

As long as by "running" doesn't mean "currently being played, I mean right now, still active, I'm viewing the Unit lists and everything, bud"...  Actually, I think that will work too (unless it locks the files, but I don't think it does) but if it does you'll get the state as of the last timepoint saved (either last time that fort was started from the main DF menus, or the last seasonal/yearly save if set to do so in the Inits), but anything you've done to the fort since then won't be represented.

To copy the fort as it is now on your screen, you'd ideally need to save back to main menu, then do your cut/copy/whatever.  good data handling practice would suggest you quit DF as well, but I'm fairly sure that's not necessary for DF.  Other games are more vigorous in locking even currently not-in-play savegame filesets, though, in my experience, whether by design (efficiency of reloading/an effort to impose anti-savescum measures) or just through sloppiness of filehandle management.

it works just fine while running. Unless of cause you try to mess/copy etc with the save WHILE you hit ingame the save button.

The save is just used at loading and at saving.
