[33g] A masterwork of Bim Tobulag has been lost!
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:31:00 am »

What.

Bim Tobulag is a woodcutter.  His only two skills than master woodcutter and dabbling wrestler. Other than hauling, his only real task is cutting down trees. I've been getting weird "masterwork lost" reports from my carpenters for a while now, several every season at this point, even though I've kept track of every masterpiece they've made (easy with gamelog.txt, x number of masterpieces made by dwarf, x number in fort, both match, also checked to see if any were damaged or worn, nope, just bins, barrels, and beds. All accounted for, all still undamaged.)

Now one of my woodcutters is getting lost masterworks, and HE has never made anything at all other than logs, so I know this is a bug.

Maybe he cut down a tree so masterfully and in a very artistic way, which resulted in a masterpiece log?

Or maybe the logs he cuts down are shaped so superbly that it would be a travesty if they were ever carved to make something else.  Like a bed.

Back in the 2D version, the first masterpiece item I've had was a stone block.

UGH. Masterpiece logs would explain what's going on, all my carpenters were trained as woodcutters.

I hate the masterwork art defilement. It's the thing I hate the most about DF. More than dwarves bumping into each other when they try to walk, more than the sandbag problem, more than dwarves unable to move a bin or barrel containing items belonging to two different stockpiles, more than the inability to select what kind of stone a workshop uses or what item it decorates except by locking the dwarf in a room, more than the fact that a dozen goblins bring in more usable metal on their backs than whole human trade caravan can in massive multi-ox pulled wagons. IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO HATE ART DEFILEMENT MORE.

I'd understand if it was linked to artifacts, which represents a dwarf's life work, but not wood bolt number 3291 or one of the hundreds of sandbags or a damned shoe. My armor/weaponsmiths have made hundreds of masterwork weapons and armor pieces, they should expect these weapons and armors to be damaged or lost in their use.

I agree... in particularly about masterwork food.

I lost more cooks that way... They bake a masterwork **Puppy Tallow Biscuits** and then some fool spills it on the floor and then they get all depressed and end up going berserk and get themselves turned into **Dwarf Tallow Biscuits**. (Not really.)

Masterwork engravings are slightly less annoying, but never being able to dig up a certain square while that dwarf is still alive is very annoying.

Masterpiece stuff is fine, at the moment, it just has some issues. Just pay attention to what walls you're digging into, and that you have enough haulers to not let a masterpiece meal rot in the kitchen. This, on the other hand, sounds like a bug. Anyway, if he made a masterpiece log (somehow) he should be happy that it was used for its intended purpose. I would be kind of pissed if my masterpiece log got used for firewood, however. Do you have a charcoal-making operating set up, by chance?

Do your saves have this happen within any reasonable interval?  I won't be able to locate it without a save, I think.

I'll make more backup saves, it happens about once a season so I should have one within a few hours.

I don't think it's "lost" until it disappears completely.
