small embark region near a volcano
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:29:55 pm »

i recently embarked in a region dominated by a volcano and the rock that surrounds it is completly made out of igneous rock, i cant find any sort of metal worth crap, and im sorta dissapointed. ive dug down until i hit magma sea, and started doing long 1 block wide tunnels to find metal veins, and no such luck. am i not looking hard enough, or should i cut my loses and try to find magma on a map that actually have metals?

All embarks will have magma eventually if you dig down enough.  There's a worldgen named "100 Volcanoes," I believe, that creates a map full of volcanoes adjacent to biomes that contain such things as flux and metals.

Try prospector to double-check existence of ore in your embark?

Prospector is a utility that is a part of the DFHack package.

You probably also want to be looking at Dwarf Therapist if you haven't already.

What settings did you use to generate your world? Since .31.19, ores have become dramatically scarcer, and a "mineral frequency" option was added to worldgen.

Also, when you chose that site, what did the site finder have to say about it? Even vanilla, the game should tell you whether you can expect shallow or deep metals, along with dirt, clay, and flux, before you embark there.

Wait.  You set the frequency of metals (i.e. Metal Scarcity) to 80k in the world design?

Smaller is better for metal frequency. A very high number makes it very rare.

Which means that your next embark will be absolutely filthy with metal. The variety probably won't change (depending on the embark) but you're sure to have a lot of it.

It can be. Having too much metal makes Flux stone rare for some reason.

It's a problem because you don't suddenly see iron ores in layers they don't exist in. The original embark would still lack metals.
