For some reason, when I checked a dwarf baby's thought it told me that the Dwarf cannot get through the day without alcohol.

Did anyone else notice this?

Yes, every dwarf baby seems to have this trait. I think every single dwarf is alcohol-dependent from birth.

Babies are born with all of their likes, dislikes, and personality traits already set. It's a bit odd, but it would be significantly more complicated to make them gain those characteristics as they grew up.

Really?  Seems like it would be possible to set half them when they become a child, and the other half when they become an adult.  Code already exists for changing characteristics (based on the existence of "doesn't really care about anything anymore").  Of course, I imagine Toady already has some sort of bloat prepared for this.

Well, think about it for a bit.  Humans have an alcoholic drink every now and then, as something on the side.  Dwarves live on the stuff, and their bodies can't function properly without it.  Dwarven women, due to their drinking habits, produce milk that is naturally laced with alcohol.

Alcohol is more calorie dense than carbohydrates.    It's dwarf fuel.

Another alternative might be to add a 'known' flag per attribute, and only show them after they are triggered in some fashion.

The dwarves remind me of a story I once read in The Onion about a "reverse alcoholic" who was always drunk and could only sober up with booze. I imagine dwarves function like this.

What would be the point of drinking then if there already drunk, thats the whole point of drinking

maybe they just need it because they are otherwise too morose to move.

Or perhaps with their long lifespans they get all philosophical and ponder the meaning of rock or the many shades of grey in antracite, alcohol would blurr these intriguing thoughts and leave a dwarf in a mood to do something physical.

Dwarves can be very focussed (as demonstrated by the various strange moods and obsessions), alcohol may dull the brilliance of dorfs just enough to get some work done during the day. (without running off muttering to themselves and selfishly claiming all sorts of stuff)

They probably slowly go straight into perpetual hangovers as the booze in their system lessens.
