"Haul this, haul that. Oh look a falling miner.... Hrgglblargl!"

Urist McHauler has been possessed!

"I must memorialize my death!"

Urist McHauler works furiously!

"Now the memorization has been complete. Everyone shall know how each and every single one of organs look like as they are being forced apart at high speeds!"

In my first fort, waaaay back, I didn't even realise moods resulted in artifacts. I didn't have many workshops, so I just thought that strange mood dwarves were ticking berserker time bombs, so I'd assign war dogs to them. It was like, "so-and-so has been possessed" and I went WHAT THE ****, THAT CAN HAPPEN?!?!?! and looked around for a ghost.
This was before DF2010 and ghosts.
Ah, good times.

First move was secretive. My MILITIA CAPTAIN grabbed two saguaro logs and made a saguaro cage with a picture of a pine tree in saguaro. Pretty lame, but then I thought, "Hey, wait a minute! I could put this in my militia-captain's room and shove his favorite animal in it! He'll be so damn happy...". Second artifact was in the same fort and was a fey mood. A jeweler (one of the initial seven!) grabbed a SINGLE rough milk quartz and it turned out to be 'a perfect milk quartz encircled with bands of milk quartz'. This was my oldest fort too, but even then only 1.75 years into existance.

My first was also one of my best, I had just gotten together enough adamantine to make two battleaxes for the two legendary axedorf/wrestlers that were my military at the time. The weaponsmith that I had just started training on copper (My dorfs were using a pair of steel ones I had traded for up to that point) had a mood. He grabbed all the adamantie, some obsidian, and 2 rubies and made and adamantie battleaxe with all sorts of obsidian and ruby decorations. It was worth more than the rest of my fort put together and I gave it to the senior dorf of the pair. He would one man armies with that thing.

It was a sword or axe. I can't remember, but it was iron which made it at least somewhat useful.

Well, it took me a little while, but I believe my first successful mood netted me a bracelet made of oak, maple, birch, or something to that effect. With not a single decoration. I was churning out prepared meals worth more than it.

My first unsuccessful (i.e. my first mood) lead to the dwarf going berserk, charging down a hall, slamming my dungeon master against a wall, and beating him to death. Afterwards, he ran back down the hall, kicked a dog and then a pack of strays, which I tend to gather, came out of nowhere and ripped him to shreds.

My first artifact in the current fort is a battle axe which made my moderate level weaponsmith legendary.  It comes in at 12960 dorfbux and has a picture of itself in milk quartz.  Unfortunately, my embark has a metric shitload of galena and the first metal my moody dorf picked up was LEAD!!!!  Could've been Silver, but noooooo, she had a hankering for lead.

Other than that and a Goblin Bone Warhammer, most of the rest of the artifacts in the fort are floor grates, three armour stands, weapon racks, table ...... I got enough artfiact furniture to outfit a couple of noble's rooms sans beds..... and nobles.

My first mood got me a milk quartz throne, depicting a sasquatch beating the shit out of my woodcutter. I remember it because for like a week after that it was nothing but basalt and wood garbage

some time after reading this one of my dwarves crafted an alder crown, and it took just one log...
why does it happen that when I read a topic about an artifact my dwarves HAVE to do something like that? (like a red zircon barrel)
