As far as I remember, from Empire onwards it's no longer possible to mod the map (amogst other important things) on TW games, that alone makes TCs impossible. I remember reading an interview on TWC where they justified this with the "GAME IS NOW SO COMPLEX, YOU CANT MOD IT" sort of point. This was on Napoleon times.

For mor information about the matter go to TWC forums and peek a little trough the modding section  :-[.

It looks like it actually is possible to change the world map but it's much more difficult than it was in pre-Empire games.

I'd have thought that would have been supported by the Assembly Kit, but it's not. So I guess I was wrong, older TW games were, in fact, more mod-friendly. That's pretty disappointing

CA took a very anti-mod attitude after Medieval 2, its quite depressing because mods are what made Total war games what they are. Europa Barbarorum, for example, is proof of what a dedicated team can do to a game when the game gives them a chance. In spite of how many sales that cost them.

Here is the worse part of all this, they lied constantly about it.. When Empire was released CA lied CONSTANTLY about mod tools, they swore up, down, and to the left that they would release modtools asap and a huge amount of people believed them and bought Empire because of that False-Promise. They STILL haven't delivered.  Now Empire's modders have done a whole lot considering how limited they are but because of CA not making Empire moddable and not delivering the mod tools they promised its a lot less then it could be.

In fact even if CA decided to abandon their anti-mod stance and allowed modding fully, their attitude toward mods from Empire onward has essentially killed the modding community, sure, sure, there is some diehards but it is nowhere near the amount of modders total war had in the past.

They did apparently release some mod tools for Shogun 2 but from what I've seen it was pretty much for Multiplayer maps. (Though it seems from your link, the modders being as resourceful as they are, are bending it to their will, which is good.)

Honestly though, these days I realize, that if your game can't stand on its own without mods, its not really a good game, and Total war games cannot stand on their own, even tiny amount of things people can mod in Empire is required to make the game playable, same with shogun 2.  (Though for me shogun 2 is such a piece of shit that not even darthmod can make it playable for me)

Sorry, for dragging this off topic, Total war games used to be an amazing series with amazing mods and CA killed that, so I kinda have to rant about them sometimes.

Yes, it is the same way with Civ, but it didn't matter that much to me on that one since I bought the delux Civ 4 that included all expansions

I've always felt mods in Total War games boil down to a bunch of fanatic history buffs who complain over every tiny historical inaccuracy and demand CA make 100% historically accurate games, down to ensuring uniforms and clothing are 100% authentic. And when CA doesn't, and specifically says they go for a proper historical FEEL, they just complain more...

Though Third Age WAS an awesome mod. /offtopic

I can't say I've found any DLC actually "offensive". Sure, there's some I wouldn't buy, but I don't feel DLC is some kind of evil tumor infecting the gaming industry. Perhaps because I'm not paranoid and believe DLC is content that was made in the game, until some bigwig came along and said: "HEY! Cut that out of the launch, we can sell it later."

CA's decision to shun modding did miff me, but given how astonishingly toxic and entitled the TW modding community was, I can understand why perhaps they wanted to focus elsewhere.

Ohh yeah the Sims 2 DLC is just a huge collection of rip offs. You can pay a dollar just for a wooden table.
This, one thousand and one times this. I don't even bother paying for that stuff when websites like Paysite Booty just let you download it all for free, and even then most of it is just complete utter garbage that I don't want anyways.

I cannot play TW games unmodded ever since I used Darthmod for Empire, because of how bad the vanilla version was, and found that I liked it better modded. Plus I like my strategy games more realistic, authentic, and slower paced.

Quite honestly it looks like CA are trying to ruin the Total War series with the changes they are making, control points in field battles in Rome 2 for instance, and it's up to the modders to fix these problems.

More on topic, DLCs don't really bother me that much as long as they aren't like "We're releasing this $20 DLC that should of been in the original game in the first place"

It is kind of funny since the Total War series always has ahistorical units.

And as for all the god damn company, they will blame their sales decreasing on the pirates back. Yeah... pirate killed TW franchise i tell you, not corporate greed.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

They always do... I don't know why.

It is that they kept bogging down their series with not only constant sequels but with slower and slower sequels.

I like to compare Shogun 1 and Shogun 2. The first Shogun could be played in a single sitting within reason and the game was easy to play, deep, and fun at the same time. While the second was also fun and also deep it was slow and difficult.

So when you get a game that takes a lot of commitment to play and sequels coming out VERY close to the next one... you do not want to buy another sequel.

I own Empire and Shogun 2 was just a "it is good?" purchase... but I have no interest in Napoleon or Rome 2 total war. Are they excellent games? Probably, I wouldn't be surprised. I just can't care when I am still playing these old ones.

It is what happens when you saturate a market. No matter HOW good a game is, saturate the market and the well will dry up.
