Embark screen biomes misleading
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:11:00 pm »

The past several fortresses I've started have had both mountain and heavily forrested tiles in its 6x6 area. However, every single time this has resulted in an area that has grass with scattered boulders but absolutely no trees or harvestable plants anywhere. Not a single bloody tree or square of prickle berries.

I second this. It seems like "Heavily Forested" only really means "Heavily Forested" if your biome is some kind of Forest. Otherwise it's secret code for "Sparse".

This is from going to marshes/swamps, by the way. They show up with "Thick" vegetation, which does hold true, but I imagine that the same problem develops if you go to a "Thick" vegetation area that's not known for vegetation.

Also, "Thick" vegetation is color coded light green unlike "Heavily Forested,"
even though both are the highest level of trees/vegetation AFAIK.

I think this is related to elevation. It only occurs in high mountainous areas. In the lower elevation areas you can get mountain and trees.

It just needs to be set to automatically show "None" when your past a certain elevation.

Yeah there is a treeline above which trees will not grow but beyond the fact your likely on/close to mountains there appears to be no way of determining what the basic height for an area is before embarking.

I wonder if the problem isn't something else.

I was going to start a new thread, but perhaps you're encountering the same thing I am.

When I choose a location, and finally embark, the place my little team ends up is absolutely nothing at all like the place I chose from the map.

I can choose an area thats entirely forest/plains with a river through the middle of it, and I end up in a place thats primarily ocean, with a little bit of mountain on the side.

I installed .32a onto my laptop (grabbed the wrong download by mistake) and had this problem. Finally realized I'd picked up an old version, so I wiped it completely, and installed .33b... but I still have the problem. So, I installed .33b on my desktop... STILL have the same problem.

It's a clean install, I didn't do anything other than extract the zip, and run the .exe. I generate a random world, and try to start a fortress, and this happens. I've tried in both windowed and full screen, just in case, but it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... I suspect I'm the one thats screwed up, since I can't find anything else about this in the forums, and it happens on two computers... but it's rather frustrating!

The treeline is altitude 150. If your biomes are all above that, then you won't get trees in a "heavily forested" area.

Well I don't know about Riemann, but I'm missing a lot more than trees. Oceans appearing in the middle of the continent, and such. It's definitely screwy.

This is a good argument to change these biomes into something not labeled "heavily forested".

I had to re-pick my new map's fortress 3 times today because, despite keeping elevation in the blue, cliff indications around 2-3 and over half the land covered in "heavily forested", I still got stuck in a completely treeless zone.
