Bottom line is, it would be good if it wasn't for the FPS hit.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

While this idea is good, if it was just applied with modified murky pool code, the area around your fortress will flood, particularly on smaller maps. If they were given a 1/7 chance of making a puddle while raining, this could work out.

Besides, making a water collection basin out of stone is better than using an easily-accessed by monsters murky pool.

Has building a murky pool been suggested yet?

Just saying, a pretty good compromise.

Except you can't.
Water will only gather on the specific tiles that are marked as murky pools when you embark.

And if we could build murky pools where we wanted to...a compromise between those who want realistic rainfall (I push for proper water tables and drainage through clay/soil) and those who don't want another reason to remove weather entirely.

I would find it fun for rainwater to drain through the loose layers of soil and pool at the bottom of solid rock underground where you just happened to build your bedrooms. Would give an added necessity to smooth your walls, lest the rain get in.
