Military ideas?
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:07:58 pm »

Right now mine is spartan, First squad has bronze armour and weapons (Spears) And bronze shields. Second has the same armour and shields, but with bronze short swords and my final squad is my elite guard (High quality bronze EVERYTHING) and legendary in all weapons.

Lemme hear some of these ideas

Edit: Yes, I mean every single weapon, I have one swordmaster, one spearmaster, one axelord, one macelord, one hammerlord and one elite wrestler (Spartans don't use bows or crossbows...)

Bronze/steel sword squad in front.  Leather/copper spears/axes/sometimes halberds in back.  Leather crossbows behind them.  Usually a set of war animals in front.  I very much enjoy setting out several burrows and getting my little military men standing in neat, orderly rows.  It looks fantastic.

Squads of three, clad in armor of iron and leather, with iron/silver weapons(a few lucky ones get steel). They shall patrol the ever winding corridors of the DeathMaze. Any that earn legendary status in their respective weapon skill shall be recruited to the Fortress Guard.

A mob armed with a motley assortment of all kinds of weapons and armor.

Yeah, I'm still working on it.

I usually go for a 'grab whatever's lying around' policy.

Spartans sounds cool though. If you want them to look a bit more like 300 assign the uniform as you said but without body armour (helmet and shield excepted) and assign a leather loincloth, a red cape and sandals.

Small group of extremely well-trained and well-armored soldiers clad in all masterwork iron/steel and with near all legendary skills.

I normally send 1 or 2 soldiers to deal with a siege squad.

Dresses for everyone! I can't seem to get them consistently wearing robe / mail / breastplate / cloak, but dresses go on perfectly.

The civilians are also decked out in armour. It's supposed to be light armour, but after upgrading their crappy bone gauntlets and greaves to steel (which does tie with iron as the lightest common armour metal) the only difference between their uniforms and the military uniform is the leather body armour and the leather boots. I should be giving them the fancypants mail and greaves.

I go with squads of three, both to increase skill gain and because once they're legendary you don't need more than a couple of dwarves for any siege squad.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Every member of my military gets one robe, dyed dark blue.
Once they get a named kill, they receive a red one.
Once they become legendary, they are given a green one.
And finally at their death, if they have all other robes, they are to be buried with a black robe.

Because I don't have enough to micromanage.

Helmets as a sign of rank. Iron are grunts, iron studded with brass are less grunty but still down there, iron with black bronze are just below officer... repeat with steel for named kill 'officers', and if I ever play a fortress long enough, candy for any titan killers.

As of yet though, nothing seems to get thru my traps, so...

"Regulars" are small squads of 3-4 in full-time training and having barracks near the access tunnels.  Steel armor and adamantine helm.  Supposed to be using adamantine weapons (except the hammers), but have grown attached to bronze and iron weapons that do well enough.  Currently two squads with axes, one with short swords, one with spears, one with silver hammers, and one with crossbows.  At this point most of them (except the crossbow unit) are elite or legendary.

"Reserves" are 4-5 squads training up on a schedule (2-in-3 or 1-in-3).  Started with leather armor, weapon, and shield, but now have gear the same as the regulars for the most part.  Hammer, Sword, Spear and Crossbow squads.

"Guild Squads" are squads with no training schedule for everyone else to practice in their spare time and get to wear clothes rather than run around naked.  Leather armor, metal cap, and basic tunic/trousers/gloves/high boots/etc.  Might add a mail shirt eventually as well.  Hammer, Sword, Spear, Crossbow, Woodcutters training with axes, and the Miners are equipped with picks.  Guild squad members are generally the logistics side of the fortress; miners, masons, mechanics, cook, medical staff, core craft and smithing positions.

(I like the 'everyone is conscripted into a squad' approach for two reasons.  First, it eventually gets them all some basic military skills - level 2-4 in a weapon, some dodge skill, etc.  That might be enough for them to survive a fight, and also makes it easier to convert them into a reservist if necessary.  Second, if they are in individual combat training they are not in the statue hall socializing and forming too many friendships that make tantrum spirals worse.  Downside is that sometimes they are so busy training that they don't do their main job - which can be annoying.  And which is why I periodically take my mayor, broker, or armorer out of their squad.)

All of my squads are kit in full iron (eventually transitions to steel or steel+candy if I have the resources).
1 squad of 10 speardwarves
1 squad of 10 hammerdwarves (silver warhammers)
1 squad of 10 axedwarves
1 or 2 squads of 10 marksdwarves (usually any crossbow)
1 squad of 5 swordwarves (Fortress Guard, may switch between iron or training swords depending on whether I need them for more than just justice).
