[33g] Well Overflow
« on: January 02, 2008, 02:52:00 am »

I installed a well a few stories below the river.  Right next to the river is a floodgate that stops the flow of water.

The river thawed before I realized it, and the water began to flow (the gate was open so it could fill my 3x3 resevoir just below the well).

When I noticed it, the well was overflowing.  No problem, I thought, I'll just close the floodgate.

It closes, but the water keeps coming out of the well.  A few of the lower levels the fort have already filled up and I don't see any stop in sight.

Seems that if a well overflows, it keeps producing water.

I think this is another one of those U-bend infinite water generation loops.

FYI, something very similar just happened to me, also triggered by a thaw.  My well is at the same level as the lower level of a brook, with a channel beneath the well extending near the brook but not all the way, and a channel one level above that reaching to the brook.  I guess that probably qualifies as a "U-bend."  Anyway, when I first dug it in the spring, the water was flowing and it worked beautifully and my kingdom flourished.  When winter came, the brook froze, and still my puppies and donkey foals frolicked indoors, unaware of the cruel fate awaiting them.  Then the spring arrived, the brook thawed, and the well (along with the access stairway beside it) erupted in a projectile-vomiting geyser of liquid death.  (Well, maybe that's a bit melodramatic, but give me a break, I'm watching my empire drown.)

Anyway, in case it helps, I've backed up my savefile from just before this happened.  I don't know how files are shared in this system, but I'll be glad to pass it along to the developers if they wish it.

Cheers
