Sereteyo: The Sheltered Tribe - A Multi-racial Story-fort
« on: October 15, 2011, 06:04:53 am »

Nullus paused from his bookkeeping and glanced out of his office window. He couldn't make out any of the faces of the people below but it was easy enough to distinguish someone by their race. Humans had their confident swagger and sheer body mass. Elves gliding about on stick thin limbs. Dwarves walking around, chest high, with questionably-vital alcohol in-hand. Goblins quickly striding through the crowd, mind focused on whatever task they had set themselves. Kobolds darting through the crowd, occasionally stopping to chat with others of their kind in the old tongue.
Somewhere down their was my beautiful wife, Mistem, with her long, pumpkin hair and golden-yellow eyes that seemed to shine like the stars behind her glasses. She never told me what made her fall in love with a goblin.

Sereteyo is a fort like no other, where dwarves live amongst elves, humans, goblins and kobolds in a mostly above ground town. It is a vanilla dwarf fortress with each of the main races replaced by a faction from my WIP mod Hydra Rising and the weapons replaced with ones from Corrosion.

It begins 129 years after a terrible disaster that rendered half the planet almost-uninhabitable and follows the stories of a group of refugees that have re-settled in the historic village of Sereteyo. While most of the Refugees are ex-employees of Rocter Industries they have made contact with the roaming Huntsmen bands and the nearby Rocter mining outpost. There's one problem. Every day brings more news of attacks on travelers and merchants by wild, red-coated people and mysterious, green-coated bandits.
Where is this going? Only time will tell.

Dorfings highly recommended. As much detail as you want. Single name dorfs will gain the surname of the person they dorf, as their children will inherit their surname and wives will take their husband's surname.

This looks very interesting! I'd like Drakoniss, a kobold scholar who was born in a normal kobold settlement, was taught by one of the greatest dwarven minds ever when he visited Drakoniss's then-current home and left with him. Now Drakoniss wants to unite his race and enlighten them all.

If your idea of the time-frame of the fort is wrong for Drakoniss's backstory, make him a kobold scholar who hopes to become a legendary blacksmith like his master (a dwarf) was.

I'm not entirely sure what a story fort is. May I dorf somebody even if I don't currently have a machine capable of running the game? My PC seems to have died, and I don't want to try playing it on my Mac.

If I can add to the fun, I'd like to add Buckler Shieldson, a dwarf Death Squad Officer who secretly harbors deep questions about the society he serves and protects. Ideally, he'd have an unusual weapon skill which makes him stand out from his fellow DSOs, and some surprising Social Skills to go along with his high Judge of Intent (perhaps Pacifier, Negotiator, or Persuader... or the more obvious Liar/ Intimidator).

I'm just getting into the stuff happening here on the forum, and still trying to catch up with post-40d advances. Tell me more about what's going on here, and I'll slide into the spirit of things better.

I believe this is the "prequel" fortress mentioned in the thread for the Hydra Rising mod that Nobody Pro made. This is a community fort, so Nobody's going to be playing it the whole time, but he'll accept dwarfings, share stories about what happens, and maybe even accept advice for what to do.

Correct me if any of this is wrong, Nobody.

(When I say "Nobody," I'm obviously referring to Nobody Pro.)

I'm so happy, the joke finally worked after six ears of using this username :P.
You were right except for the 'prequel' part. This is more of a test for how well that sort of fort would work i.e. pre-built with a large population already moved in (INVADERS:OFF --> INVADERS:ON of course).

EDIT: I look forward to writing Drakoniss, GreatWyrmGold. Buckler Shieldson will go in but as an undercover DSO. I just realised I didn't actually say this: this is a village consisting of ex-Rocter employees and starts 129 years after whatever disaster ends up befalling the prequel fort (each major city of the old world falls to something different but it renders the other side of the world (the densely populated side) uninhabitable). I'm thinking nuclear or mutant plague myself.

If i'm allowed to be, I want to be a minotaur. His parents were killed by a cruel adventurer, and he had to make his own way in the world. He started out as a bartender, and later became a merchant. He makes his living selling furs. He has no family.

If not, I would like to be an elf who wants to be human. He hunts and is shunned by other elves. He supplies furs to a friendly merchant.

Buckler woke in a sweat. He couldn't remember much, just a cloud of dust and a sharp pain in his head. He patted himself down before he lay down again.
Just a dream, he thought.
The details were coming back to him, they had been tearing down those tree-like constructs in that ancient, overgrown elven compound and one collapsed, burying him in rubble.
I died, he realised. It had been so vivid.
He rolled onto his side and looked at his wife. Her short, dark hair had fallen over her features as she slept but she still looked beautiful. As much as he wanted to tell her the truth, he couldn't. What would she think if she knew what he was capable of, what he was prepared to do when he finally recieved his orders.

The first time I named Buckler he died in a construction accident. I scummed and it occurred a second time, failing to even injure anyone this time. Hopefully a more substantial update soon.

Ah, but if he is undercover, then was that REALLY Buckler Shieldson? That's the trouble with sleeper agents.

I will be a Gothic Human ( someone had to be one.)

His name shall be... actualy, he never got a name. Being born in a rather savage little backwater and being forced to eat the remains of your caretakers will cause you to forget things that dont have any impact on daily survival. He once ran with  the cult of armok, but that ended when they got sick of him eating the new blood rather than training them. Fears the Authority but sees the Agency as a joke, considering he has caused at least a barrelfull of 'strange black liquid' to spill over his lifetime. He now fights much like a madman, and tends to carve meaningful saying side-by-side with pictures of mutilated corpses. In all, Kaen, as he now calls himself, is a fun guy to be around, but its better to be around him behind a two foot thick panel of steel.

He probably hiched a ride on the carivan to this lovely little town, and he most likely sees it as a way of getting out of the sight of the Agency.

Don't worry, the tinkers (techie) class are still there and I haven't actually updated the Hydra Rising download yet. Fingers crossed for an internet connection next week.
