Dwarf Fortress Clans? o:
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:13:39 pm »

I've enjoyed DF for a year (and yet I'm still a noob at it) and I'm looking for a close knit gaming clan that's themed around playing DF.
Will I ever find such a suitable clan for me or am I being optimistic with the world's nerd population again?

You're looking at the biggest group of DF players - the forums.

Well, Df isn't exactly the most popular game in the world, so we're already a relatively small group compared even to minecraft, which is in a similar niche.
If we weren't hardcore, we probably wouldn't even still be playing, so there's that.
We're also totally happy to share our experiences with ‼fun‼ and ‼science‼, so you're not very likely to get bored.
Finally, most of us play with pretty much the same mindset, so I'm sure you'd feel right at home 'round here.

And if not, there's always ponies to keep you company.

You could try roping a few people in to an x-way skype chat.

No. Go rent a teamspeak server and pay for it all by yourself for me. Now.

DF isn't interesting enough for clans, or multiplayer enough.  You're not gonna get 20 people on and go run a dungeon.  The game (let's be real) loses its luster after a month or two, but then there's a new release and you remember why you love it.  There's not really much to clan about.  "Who wants to sit around while I play a game?" isn't so appealing.

The only real 'clans' are the community games. Each game has its own set of rules. Deathgate is trying to make an outpost in hell. Oceanbridges is trying to build a bridge crossing an ocean to connect an island with the mainland. There's even one where you have to build a device for the next player that will 'screw them over' while looking for the one that the previous player left for you. Or make your own! Want to relive the glory of communism with a gulag? Here's your chance.

The biggest problem, of course, is the lack of good multiplayer.  Successions are the old favorites, and Carne's experimental multiplayer server is fun, but very slow.

Perhaps someone could set up a "Mafia" style succession fort.  Three players try to work together, while one tries to mess it up, but if that one is found out, then they lose.  That could generate a lot of intrigue and careful planning.

Most commonly among my friends, we all get into it around the same time, pick it back up, and swap horror stories for a couple months before taking a break for something like Minecraft.

The problem with the "mafia" is that all players tend to try and interfere with others, mostly due to different gameplay styles. The fort would be one circus of a madhouse, however.

I think you just described every single Community Fortress from Boatmurdered to Failcannon.
