Is this possible?!
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:25:24 am »

Salutations, recently my fortress came under siege, the siege was rather "Interesting" and "Fun" I didn't know what to do and it turns out that 40 dwarfs can be slaughtered within a time period of 5 minutes. Anyhow I got the drawbridge up and my fortress survived at the time I did not know what tantrum spirals where. But that's not the reason for me posting this thread. I came across something rather peculiar. One of my miners went rather insane and started throwing a tantrum and one turned another and he started digging in the direction of the nearby river. It drowned half my fortress!

My question to you is WHY? Is this a bug? Is this programed to happen? At one point I did have a designation to dig there because I did not know how water wheels worked but I canceled it before the miner started digging. The only plausible explanation I can think of is that the designation somehow stayed and it was coincidence that it just started mining when he threw a tantrum.

What do you think?

I've never heard of this before. Designations don't "stay" after you remove them, so this is really rather odd.

To quote that old chestnut: supply daggerogues, or I shall judge that this event did not, in fact, transpire.

Dwarves have been never known to just start digging on their own without a designation.  You probably still had the digging designation in place.

Never heard of a dwarf deliberately digging in an undesignated area just to fuck everyone over.

I DID however see crazy dwarves pulling the levers they weren't supposed to.

A year later, my legendary engraver engraved him colliding with an obstacle and dying.

Yeah, that's normal for berserk dorfs. It leads to lots of fun.

Perhaps the designation was on sand or similarly colored and was just difficult to see?

Thank you all for your replies, it is very possible that I could not see the designation due to the surrounding rock.
