Siege isn't sieging
« on: October 06, 2011, 10:01:56 pm »

So its the darnedest thing. A vile force of Fun has arrived... its a pack of 12 Crossbowmen with one lasher on a giant toad.  The path into my fort is layers and layers of traps... and so they're sitting out near my fort but refusing to get into engagement range. Any attempts to sally have lead to failure under a hail of bolt fire...Honestly I have the stocks to just build a battery of ballista and mow them down like dogs, but...

What the heck is keeping them? They usually just suicide charge me.

Is there a way into your base? Say if you've got a door, but blocked it off with a raised drawbridge, or maybe locked the doors, they won't be able to 'path' into your base, so they'll just stand around waiting for one.

Checked that and far as I can tell the way is clear... not sure if traps will affect their path though? I usually just rely on judicious application of water, but wanted to do something different with goblin grinders, some cage-pit traps, etc... not sure if that screws up the pathing?

ADDED: And after not even one whole season they just... left. That is so freaking strange.

Well, if for what ever reason they aren't slaughtered, sieges get bored and leave. I've never seen it as fast as one season, but I've had a seige that stood around after murdering my military for about a year or two before finally saying fuck that and leaving.

Goblins will do that sometimes. I am not sure if they see the traps or they see their friends getting trapped, but for my sieges at least it seems that after several of them get caught in the cage traps the other ones will wait at the entrance.

I think what would help bring them forward is if you had some type of bait. If there is some dwarf or even an animal that is in their direct line of sight they are more likely to charge.

I normally see this happen with the Siege Leader gets trapped or killed. The rest are simple soldiers, but once the leader is handled, the others lose heart. Atleast that's my interpretation.

Yeah, that might be it... hmm.  Though I'm restarting anyways, I'm getting all sorts of bugs with this fort... strange behaviors and all. So just going to do a clean install.  Didn't like how it was going, anyways.  And the Siege leader was there, upon his giant toad.

Laughing.

FYI, the correct spelling is "siege", as in the thread title.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Bleh. I knew that. Consecutive typos, and was close enough my brain didn't catch it. I just need to start typing slower.
