The Company

A Forum RPG Experience

The Red Dragon Inn was the most famous tavern in Farhaven; it was perhaps the most famous tavern in the known world.  Generations of adventurers had stopped by the venerable establishment to seek their fortune and toast the start of their careers.  Tonight would be no different.  Gerard sat at the most prominent table in the room, tapping his fingers on the old wood.  He'd been friends with members of the local Brotherhood of Sellswords, Mercenaries, and Treasure Hunters.  This relationship had managed to land him a Company Charter, but he had no brothers in arms to sign to the charter!  No matter, surely there were five stout souls in this city, on this busy night of drinking and merrymaking, that would join.  Membership in a sanctioned company carried some hefty benefits, after all, and he was even offering a small supply package and stipend to any that joined him.

He just needed five volunteers that would sign on for gold, battle, and glory, and his company would be born.

((OOC Info: This is a RPG where you, the people in the thread, will take control of a character in a fantasy realm at the height of the romantic era, just after the Renaissance technologically.  Gunpowder weapons and swashbuckling fights have become widespread, but the use of armor and a sword is far from dead in this realm.  PM me to set up your character, and then once the game is underway and you're in, just play by posting here what your character is saying, doing, whatever!  I'll generally update once a day or so, more often on slow days and days off, less often when busy.  All actions posted in a given day will occur at the update together, in the best order I can manage.  Characters are free to role-play with one another in the thread as much as they desire before updates; the updates will only affect the actions and such of NPCs and the game world.  The game will start once I have five players, but is not limited to just five!  Sign up, and let your career as an adventurer in this world unfold!))

Character Creation and How to Play

To create your character, simply PM me with your character's name, race, and class, and a physical description of them.  Include as much or little of a backstory as you like (if you can't think of much, we can always flesh one out together later, or leave it up to me to do it for you).  As a general guideline, any class or race from Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 will be greenlit without question.  However, that doesn't mean you have no other options!  Any special ideas you want to run by me, just ask in the PM and we'll discuss it.  Even if my answer is no, for certain classes it's something that will come later, and some others are not something you need a class to do (what is a pirate but a rogue or fighter that's at home on a ship, anyway?).  I'll email you back to coordinate any other details needed  as well as your starting inventory, and then you start playing in here!

"So, do I need to know how to play D&D to play this?"

Absolutely not!  While I'll be using some dice and the like behind the scenes to handle the action, all YOU need are your imagination and fingers!  Think of it sort of like a "YOU ARE X!" game.  You type what you want your character to do in your post, then when I update the action happens!  Talking is easier!  Just type in quotes what you want to say, and who you're saying it to.  You don't even need to wait for an update from me to talk amongst yourselves, either.

Make sure you clearly denote when you are speaking OOC (that's Out of Character for new people), that way I don't mistake your planning a secret with your fellow players or the like as something you're ALREADY doing or saying in a room full of people!

Good luck, and have fun!

Question: this is NOT a fantasy, right? By fantasy I mean magic, several races, etc. Regardless, making character. Stupid me. I see fantasy in the description.

Better questrion: Are there races besides humans or magic?

Yes; all standard Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 races can be played, and depending on your request, other non-standard races may be permitted (just ask me first, so I can familiarize myself with them before saying yay or nay).  Magic is in the world, though it's uncommon to find spellcasters.  Ability to use magic is special, which is why the world still advances mundane technology and most jobs are done the old fashioned way.

Of course, your character (as the star of the story) is permitted to be one of those special folk.

EDIT: Editing the OP to discuss character creation a bit more, so it's clear for everyone :)

Sent. I'm actually being "different" this time. I always pick lizardmen as a race when given the option. Rarely play as a human.

I'm interested. Time to use a really obscure template and tieflings! I'll send a sheet in a bit.

EDIT: Sent.

From what I read it just has D&D races. Otherwise it is the standard fantasy renaissance setting with dice determining your actions success. No D&D system mechanics to deal with.

Four character sheets sent, in, one more before we get started with the fun!  Once we get started I'll email out starting gear and wealth information to everyone.  I'll be keeping track of your supplies as well, so if you lose track of what you've got just ask me to send you an updated inventory.  Be forewarned: what you have is ALL you have.  If it's not in your backpack, you don't have it.

To make things easier on eating and drinking, I have two house rules: as long as your character has a waterskin, you don't need to worry about drinking unless I specifically make it scarce (like you're in a vast desert or an arctic wasteland); it is assumed your character always finds a small pool, river, or the like during travel and downtime and fills it up whenever possible.  There's a similar rule for food; unless your character is in a situation where survival would be unnaturally difficult, as long as you have a weapon it is assumed you can hunt enough small game and forage to keep yourself alive.  In any settled area, it's assumed you can finagle a meal somehow through odd-jobs or the like.

Also, a brief note on activity: if you disappear from this game for a long time, like a week or so, without giving me some kind of notice, I will take control of your character until your return so you aren't left behind.  I will do my best to play your character as an NPC as closely to how you yourself played them.  On your return you can resume control, or retire them and make a new one.  This is purely to prevent an active character from being frozen in place while the rest of the party moves on, or being unable to act at a crucial moment (i.e., a party healer disappears for a week and a half while the others are in a desperate fight and could really, really use some healing).

From what I read it just has D&D races. Otherwise it is the standard fantasy renaissance setting with dice determining your actions success. No D&D system mechanics to deal with.

That is correct, although I will point out that I will be using some D&D mechanics behind the scenes to help fairly determine actions and results.  However, no knowledge of them is required to play.  If you know D&D 3.5e, you might be able to have an easier time guessing how likely you are to succeed at a given action, but that's about it.

The first five characters have been submitted.  I'm sending out character info, inventories, and compiling character sheets for my record.  Expect the first update soon, then the game is on!

Sorry for the delay; an unexpected surge of 15+ hour shifts has left me a bit too worn to finish the first update as quickly as I'd hoped.  I will try to have it done in the next day or two, I promise.
