What? a spam bot that is entirely on topic? What are the odds?

I use brinkster.net. They are decent and offer a range of shared and dedicated hosting at modest prices. They support both a couple different back end frameworks (but not servlets/jsp) and I went with their service to experiment with server side code. Though if you just want static site, others will be cheaper. I'll rustle up an affiliate link when I get off work.

Never hosted a site myself, but a long time ago I was recommended 1and1 for hosting.

It really depends on the content being hosted. Is it just a informational site, or will web applications be running on it? How much traffic do you expect?

But if you have more traffic, then it’s not something I would recommend. I made that experience and then my site was super slow and in the end I had to look out for a different web hosting provider. I am much more satisfied now as my website is faster.

I like nfshosting (nearlyfreespeech.net) for small sites that don't get much traffic. Cheap, easy to use with ftp or php or whatever you want, easy to set up domains with them as well.
