Fishing issue

Problem put short: no fish

My embark doesnt have moving water of any sort and the ponds/murky pools have no fish. OK. I decided to try fishing underground where I have a lake with connection to the map edge, and I can see the vermin fish swim, disappear and appear. Even the small pond my well uses has them. I channeled the water from the lake under a floor and let my dwarves fish through floor grates, which they do just fine, but I keep getting the "theres nothing to catch in the western swamps" announcement, and my fisherdwarves go get something to drink.

Any ideas?

The vermin fish you can see are unrelated to what your fisherdwarves catch.  It's quite possible to see vermin fish moving around yet be unable to fish for them.

Underground fish seem to be bugged in the current version, or at least very rarely catchable.  Although it may help if you let your dwarves fish from the cavern lake directly instead of from a channel connected to it.  Where the dwarf is fishing determines what, if any, fish you catch.  A channel connected to the underground lake will always be considered a swamp biome, even if the underground lake has fish you won't catch them in the channel.
