Don't stick anything in your ear, unless a doctor tells you.

That goes for water, cameras, sticks, those cotton wool thingies, fingers, anything. I've had ear problems on and off for my whole life, and I can promise you that sticking stuff in your ear will more than likely make you sick.

Honestly in all my experience with Cotton Swabs I have concluded that they are nearly useless for anything but outer ear cleaning.

They just pack the wax in your ear and are a quick way to make a build up problem worse.

Though the most common way for me to get wax build up is for hair to get inside my ears.

Such things do exist, but in order to get a high quality video image you'll need to need a very expensive camera.  Search eBay for "digital otoscope".

If it's behind your eardrum there's absolutely nothing you can do. You can't clean behind that thing.

How interesting; I didn't know so many people had this much trouble cleaning out their ears. I just let the shower blast water to my eardrums from the outside until sufficiently clear, and when washing out my mouth I just blow water up my sinuses until it again reaches my eardrums. Although, for the latter I use salty water when I remember, so it doesn't create such a burning sensation in my tearducts.
 I remember my mother using cotton swabs on me long ago, but those are far more useful for keyboards and things that aren't waterproof.
