[Mac 38c] Crazy cat dwarf
« on: March 06, 2008, 01:35:00 am »

I have a crazy cat dwarf in my fortress. I didn't think much of it when she adopted the two cats I started with, but then she nabbed the cat I bought off the dwarfish caravan, the kitten one of them spawned, the next kitten as well, and, most recently, another kitten a scant day after it was born. She has 100% of the feline population under her wing, which seems a bit improbable, which is why I'm reporting it.

I have a save from the start of the spring season here. Shortly in, a kitten should be born, and assuming something unusual is in fact happening here, Goden Usirkadôl will adopt it.

Actually, the dwarf isn't the one doing the adopting.  The cats are the ones who pick their dwarves, and they will flock to dwarves who "like cats for their aloofness".

Not much you can do about it, I'm afraid.  You can't toggle cat availability because they are not interested in your wishes, just like real cats.

i got the same problem on the windows version. I had set my mind to makeing a catdriven fort, cats for food, cat crossbows, cat pelts to keep warm. Before automn, one dwarf was adopted by 28!!! cats... kinda destroyed my plans. ^^

You can set the kittens to be butchered as soon as they are born.  Cruel, yes, but they won't get adopted that way.
You might also try assigning them to a cage before they get adopted.  I'm not sure  if caged cats will pick owners.  Of course if they are picking owners that fast you will have to pay close attention to your birth announcements.

Oh, well. I guess Goden will just be a really happy dwarf...up until I start killing kittens to keep the population under control, anyway.

You should set this 'cat dwarf' to at least one of the major manegerial positions in the fortress.
Because they are obviously very good at 'herding cats'...

:) :) :) :)

This serves you right. You tried to create a fortress with a flawed concept and it was only natural for it to fail :) :) :)

Base your fortress on dog meat, dog crossbows, dog fur and so on and you will be fine. :) :) :)

You see, common sense helps greatly with this game :) :) :) :)

You could send your crazy cat dwarf hunting. Without weapons :)

It's just a law of DF.

Every Fort has at least one Crazy Cat Lady.
