Spore-like games
« on: October 01, 2011, 10:26:34 pm »

I'm totally infatuated with the idea of guiding a race through its development into a spacefaring empire, and I had been hoping that spore would do so perfectly. Obviously it hasn't. Does anyone have any recommendations for games in a similar vein, but less cutsey and simplified? Google so far has been a fruitless search :( .

I recommend Project Nomad from 1993.
It is somewhat like that, only that you do not control an empire, you are merely Earth's first intergalactic trader.
You meet several strange races, each with their unique personality.
You can also encounter hostile races, there are two that I know of are hostile, and one fo them are bent on galactic conquest.
Sounds a bit like spore?

As far as I know, it cannot be played on any of the newer systems, however it should work just fine on DosBox.

There is shores of hazeron,  but its server has been down all weekend.  It's a free MMO, you start off founding your race's first city, and rather quickly become spacefaring.  Takes a few days of playing.  It is cool in that you can see the other bodies in your solar system from the ground, and the planets orbit the sun and rotate to create days and nights.  My first planet was a moon around a gas giant, so my day/night cycle was a bit chaotic.

The biggest con to this game is the terrible lag that often plauges the server, and somewhat simple art assets.

The "simple" art dosn't bother me.
It's the lag that did me in, and expensive Internet here in Greenland.. <_<

Although it isn't ou- Well, it's still in the planning stage, actually, Thrive might be good for you when it comes out.
