Use the hoverboard, doc!

I seem to have encountered a glitch that let's you fly for a few seconds.





Once you go onto the "open space" you begin to fly. Until you walk off of that square, that is. Also, while you're on an open space, you cannot get on another one.

Where? What are you? What mods are you using? If that's a beach (it looks like one, at any rate) then it might have something to do with the notoriously glitchy oceans.

I am an erakazim elf. I am running Genesis mod. And yes it's a beach.

Oh, btw, mods have nothing to do with glitches like this.

probably one of those Freezing waves. Never encountered one myself, but then I tend to stay inland for the most part.

I suspect that directly underneath the 'Open space' in question, you will find an ice wall without a ceiling.  Don't ask me how that works, but yeah.

BackgroundGuy's idea sounds about right. The freezing water usually creates a floor, a wall and a roof (that is, floor above the wall). This particularl situation probably didn't create a roof but did create the wall itself, stopping you from falling because... well I suppose a wizard did it? That or you can't fall onto a "wall" block to avoid people getting stuck inside walls when dodging or something.
