The dwarves stopped eating
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:35:00 pm »

So, until earlier today I had the best fortress yet going. With plenty of food and minerals. But then, suddenly I noticed that several dwarves had flashing brown arrows. Yet I had loads of food. Soon enough, several dwarves starving to death. Anyone know what might have caused this?

First guess is you got the almost-newest version of the game where there was a bug that made dwarves stop eating food in barrels after the economy kicks in.  Check that you're updated to the most recent version with this nasty bug fixed.

Second guess is you have a whole bunch of inedible food like sweet pods and quarry bush leaves that need to be processed and/or cooked before they're edible.  In the [z] screen, does it list any plants or meat?  Or, if you have the economy, does the stocks screen ([z]->Stocks) show any free prepared meals?  (It'll have two items listed, normally.  First one is a small group (e.g. [11]) that are claimed, second one is a big group (e.g. [1800]) that are unclaimed.)

And make sure you have an old save from before the problem once you resolev this.  As noted in another recent thread, once a dwarf starts hunting for vermin for food, it appears he doesn't check for available edible food again till after he's stopped being 'starving', which is likely never to happen.  Otherwise, you can just wait until non-starving immigrants show up.

Do immigrant waves still come in if all other dwarves are dead?  Anyone been patient enough to wait around a few months to find out?

Yeah, your right on your first guess. It was around that time they stopped eating. However, I think I got the latest version.. I'll just try updating again.

Bumping this subject.

I've also got a collection of starving, non-immigrant, dwarves that accumulate at the cave river and simply do nothing until they die. I've checked and have the latest version, and yes, I have plently of accessible food stocks (over 1500 plump helmets).

Ha, if they get tired of plump helmets, give them some plump helmet roast (ingredients: 12 plump helmets). That'll fool 'em.

Did they become starving in 0.23.130.23a?  If they were starving from the barrel bug, they won't recover once they go vermin hunting.

I think I used a save from a older version with newest one. I abandoned and started a new one, though I haven't reached the monetary phase yet. So far they seem to be eating whatever i tell them to eat.
