thirsty dwarves wont drink
« on: January 22, 2007, 09:54:00 pm »

I have a dwarf who washed down the river to a one-square wide place and is really thirsty. But he is almost surrounded by water!

This has been reported before.  IIRC, Toady explained that this is because the dwarf wants to drink from a particular and specific square, and can't reach it.

Hmm.  Right now, I suspect that a trapped dwarf will never try and swim to safety...  I suppose checking to see if they're actually trapped and then making some sort of risk-assessment to see if it's all right to swim would be too complicated.

Maybe the player should have some way of specifically ordering a dwarf into a dangerous situation, though?  It seems a shame to have a dwarf stuck within one water square of land, say.

If a dwarf has been sitting on the same square with no job for a long time, they could periodically path-flooding out a few squares away from themselves to see if they are being dumb.  It shouldn't tax the CPU at all.  The game probably needs a few more reality checks like that.
