My greatest embark ever was one on my laptop while waiting between classes.

A serene woodland area with no aquifer, two rivers meeting to form a Y ( the fort was in the short angle of the Y), lots of shallow and dense metals, some dirt (not deep, but hey), a light layer of clay, etc.  All of my dwarfs were female with very few negative physical/mental/personality traits.

A pity I apparently lost it while trying to figure out how to transfer it to this computer -.-

As for "worst embark ever", I would've thought one of those one where the wagon ends up parked on a frozen river moments before it unthaws would count...

Started fortress mode a few months back, on one of my first embarks using Genesis and had no knowledge of checking beasts with "u", it was a nice fort with an aweome mountain canopy.

Didn't even notice the dire wolves were there till autumn.

My current embark is a volcano with a river source, flux a few levels down, clay and dozens of exposed hematite veins. I've had 6-ish miners digging them out for years and there's still tons left.

My god, while chasing mountain goats my three military members attacked the elephants and completely tore them apart.

My buddy had a few amazing embarks, however, they were also riddled with peril. His first embarking was a decent hillside site, nothing unusual, HOWEVER, after his initial merchant left he was killed by his mule which was then executed by the militia and all the goods were reclaimed... INSTANT RICHES. Unfortunately one of the children later became possessed, started up a sort of rebellion, and the kids killed all the adults.

His next site was on a mountain with precious gems and aluminum all over it, I've never had a start like that. Unfortunately winter came and they all froze to death or died of thirst having not completed their well in time.

My best embark was probably when my merchant's guard was slaughtered by a rattlesnake and dropped his weapon and armor. Woot! Unfortunately, a drought came, food collection became difficult, and then a goblin siege arrived followed by a centaur siege (one right after the other). Centaurs killed my last fortress...

Seems like, "The best of times, the worst of times".

Yeah, elephants have been nerfed pretty hard since the olden days.

I see no problems here. Fish are no longer dangerous, elephants are no longer dangerous. Maybe the hippos might cause a problem.

5 Giant Platypus, 8 Platy-people, 6 Giant Badgers - 25 Carp.

All present when I embarked. My 4 miners and my logger will have to fight for their life.

EDIT: Oh, and a conga line of normal badger men just waltzed in too.

My worst was somehow, my guess is a bug of some sort, the Clowns got into the lava of the volcano. I barely got past "This is a nice spot to dig....WTF WAS THAT?!?".

i always try to ensure my embarks have some combination of good, evil, and savage to them. if i can manage it, good forests (for unicorns), evil marshes (for beak dogs), hopefully at least one of those biomes will also be savage, but if i can, i try to squeeze in a savage desert (gds) or mountain (giant eagles) in, as well. obviously, these setups are hard to find, so i make do with what i can get, as long as it's good, evil, and savage all rolled into one, somehow

of course, this can go downhill rather fast when looking in the units list on embark and seeing some combo of ogres, werewolves, harpies, giant desert scorpions, giant badgers/pandas/capybaras (or their humanoid varieties) or the like sitting there eyeing the new walking buffet that just plopped down in the middle of their territory

or, hell, undead elephants/rhinos/hippos or hoofed beasts right at embark can potentially be a killer, too, depending on who gets the first blow in

I had a bugged world once where the wagon embarked beside a volcano whose side was eaten into by one of the grid of holes that extend all the way down to the bottom.  Everyone !!died horribly!! as soon as I unpaused.
