Too vague for me to answer, but I can tell you that a dwarf equipped with a shield and a training sword will almost never use the training sword, preferring to do hand to hand combat and shield bashing.

Not as long as you think.  Once a creature loses consciousness, all shots are headshots, and skulls are made of posterboard.
