Microphone tech talk
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:43:16 pm »

Hello everyone, I've been doing YouTube videos for a while now, mainly as a means of improving how I speak and trying to make myself a more chill/kind person. It's been working quite well so far, but I think I'm due for a new microphone, this USB plugin Logitech one just isn't cutting it. I bought it for like 5 bucks, so I think that says something. Anyway, that mic had god awful sound quality and it picked up every sound that was made, my computer's humming, mouse clicks, and keyboard strokes, even though it's only pointed towards me. So, I need to know about microphones, specifically about which microphone would be best for me. It would be best if it -
-Didn't cost much more than $150 bucks
-Had the best sound quality possible (This one's obvious, but I thought I'd throw it in there)
-ONLY pick up a small area of sound in the front of it.
Also, what's the deal with pop shields? Would I need one of those too, if I'm trying to get good sound quality?

I used to live with a musician who owned one of these. It was pretty great quality. Doesn't include the shock mount though, which is a bit of a downer.

However, I found this just taking a cursory glance. Looks like a great deal.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I'll admit I know very little about mics, but this site might be a decent place to start just to see what's out there.

I actually do have experience operating a sound board with live sound at performances, but I pretty much had to use the mics that they gave me.  As a sound operator, I'll tell you that a mic will pick up from a direction it is designed for (some are omni-directional, some are very directional).  As to how far away it picks up from and how quiet of things that it picks up...maybe it's my mics, but in my experience, that has more to do with the gain than anything.  Set a lower gain and a higher amplification to get the same volume but less other stuff.  Or use a compressor to clip off quiet/loud stuff.  I'm sure you can find a piece of software that will let you do this electronically if you look.  In fact, I think LMMS can do it...don't quote me on that, though.

I own one of these, and I'm going to give you the warning that it is going to pick up a lot of the background noises due to the sensitivity in general of condenser-based mics. However, depending on how far away from the mic you like to be when you're shooting your youtube videos, a condenser might be your best bet compared to a dynamic mic.

This is an example of that mic with minimal sound-editing. I have lately been able to filter a lot of the background noise out with compression effects.
