Happy Petrov Day!
« on: September 26, 2011, 02:10:39 pm »

Today, September 26th, is Petrov Day, named for Stanislav Petrov, an officer in the USSR who saved the world as we know it in 1983 by going against his orders to launch the USSR's nuclear weapons. Celebrate that the world did not die that day, and that men exist who can be trusted not to destroy the world for the sake of their orders.

Well...not exactly. He didn't have the capacity to initiate a launch, nor was he ever ordered to. What he did was, when the new early warning system indicated five launches, he didn't immediately call up General Command and say "OMG TEH AMERIKANS DONE NOOK'D US!", because then the Soviet High Command probably *would* have issued an order to launch their nukes. Instead, he reported calmly that the system was reporting five detections, but that he believed it was a false alarm. (For one thing, he later commented that they had been instructed that a US attack would have involved most of the US arsenal, not five measly missiles.)

Still a hero though, for using his head and issuing a calm, rational report. A report of imminent attack would have forced the High Command to respond without any time for consideration, and likely would have triggered a nuclear response. Which would have triggered a US nuclear response. Which means most of us wouldn't be here. So well done, Colonel Petrov.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I think I might be following a trend here but I've always thought the Russians as a people were super cool. Here's to you Petrov, for taking the time out of your in your vodka swilling, bear wrestling manly competition to avert a nuclear war.
